And meanwhile, while all eyes are on the boys at Belmont, Thorpedo Anna slaughtered her competition in the Acorn Stakes at Belmont! Do I hear "a filly is Horse of the Year"?

Shortly after watching his Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Thorpedo Anna roll by 5 1/2 lengths in the $500,000 Acorn Stakes (G1) June 7 at Saratoga Race Course, trainer Kenny McPeek quipped: "Could have run her in the Belmont." Few would argue with him.

He ran a helluva race against a stellar field, so I can't say he didn't deserve to win. But I was kind of rooting for Sierra Leone (who got badly bumped twice, and squeezed almost off his feet right out of the gate but made an amazing comeback and would have caught Dornoch, I think, if the race had been the full 1 1/2 miles instead of 1 1/4) or Seize the Grey.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — When Luis Saez first rode Dornoch at Saratoga Race Course last summer, he told trainer Danny Gargan, “You have the Derby winner.” While that did not come true, Dornoch made good on that optimism Saturday by winning the first Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, hugging the...

Peter S. Beagle has finally released a new work after a long, dry spell. He is, IMO, one of the most under-rated American writers in literature. He is one of those writers who makes me stop now and again just to admire the perfection of a turn of phrase, descriptive passages, and goes from humor to horror in the space of a sentence. Gorgeous, gorgeous prose, and also a damned fine story and a good read. Recommended. Pick it up, read it, and enjoy!
