The Traverse City Record-Eagle is a daily morning newspaper that circulates in 13 counties in northwest lower Michigan. It distributes through a region that includes Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee and Wexford counties, and limited portions of neighboring counties. The Record-Eagle also publishes a variety of other publications including a monthly real estate guide and many specialty sections throughout the year. The Record-Eagle is owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., a parent company for daily, weekly and semiweekly newspapers published in more than 200 communities throughout the United States. On November 3, 1858, Morgan Bates published the first edition of the Grand Traverse Herald, a weekly paper proud of its stance against slavery and balanced reporting of local and national issues. That first paper primarily served Traverse City, an outpost in northern Michigan's wilderness. Since those early beginnings we have grown to become the largest and dominant source of news and advertising information for the 13 counties of northwest lower Michigan. Throughout the years the newspaper has evolved to meet the increasing needs of its readers and advertisers. Throughout the changes that have occurred in recent years, the Record-Eagle has remained steadfast to its mission. We deliver to the people of these communities significant news affecting their daily lives. We feature in-depth news reports of key local and regional issues; stories on regional business trends; complete sports coverage; specialty reports on schools, health and higher education; and lifestyle reports chronicling everything from area entertainment events to local social trends. In short, we report on aspects of hometown life important to our readers while providing merchants large and small with an efficient vehicle to promote their goods and services. Only the Record-Eagle can provide the reach and response in our market area. This is why the Record-Eagle is the preferred medium for advertisers in reaching our market — and it's been that way for more than 150 years.

Accumulating snow returns tonight into Monday morning across the region. Wet, sloppy snow will lead to hazardous travel conditions that likely overlap with the Monday morning commute. There is still some uncertainty regarding this system, so be sure to monitor the forecast for the latest updates!

Generally clear skies and light winds tonight over much of the area will lead to a very cold night for much of the area, especially away from the coasts. Temperatures falling into the single digits above and below zero overnight, combined with even a light wind, will make it feel much colder. Be sure to bundle up and take extra precautions to stay warm if going out and about tonight!

Unfortunately, much warmer than normal temperatures are expected to return around Christmas, likely carrying through the end of the month. Temperatures well above freezing will lead to periods of drizzle and rain showers, which will be detrimental to the snowpack.

What a hoot-iful sight!

Six owl species often consider Sleeping Bear Dunes home, at least for part of the year.
But only three owl species are likely heard calling in winter.

Do you know which ones?

*Hint: While snowy owls (pictured here) are often seen in winter, they rarely call out.

Why do some species of owls call during winter?
For some owls, winter is the time for establishing territory and attracting mates. The calls serve as a way to communicate with potential partners and to assert dominance over their hunting grounds. With no leaves on the trees, their calls can travel even farther.

This is the perfect time to head out at night and listen for their enchanting calls. Experiencing the haunting melodies of these nocturnal creatures is truly magical. Bundle up, head out, and immerse yourself in the winter wonder of Sleeping Bear Dunes!
