Sunday night was our 21st annual Paul Mitchell Schools Gala at the The Beverly Hilton. Following such an incredible event, we are always left with beautiful centerpiece flowers. The next day, the flowers were delivered to Project Angel Food, which was founded in 1989 by Marianne Williamson to deliver nutritious meals to vulnerable people facing critical and life-threatening illnesses. Perhaps these flowers will brighten someone's day, along with their meals.

It brought back a wonderful memory for me of being a volunteer for Project Angel Food in the late 80s. Believe it or not, I had my "spare change canister" route, where I had placed canisters at different stores and businesses at the Beverly Center and other locations in the LA area. Once a week, I would revisit all of the stores to empty the loose change of donations. I have no idea how much those canisters raised, but I certainly loved the experience of volunteering my time to support a cause that was important to my mentor at the time, Marianne Williamson.

I am truly humbled to have been honored at the awards luncheon yesterday held in Beverly Hills. Ava Walker has an amazing heart of gold, and is using her life experience of growing up in the system to do all she can to enhance the social and emotional well-being of foster youth through her nonprofit.

With over 390,000 foster youth nationwide, (33,000 in the Los Angeles area alone), we all have an opportunity to use our resources to make a difference.

I'm so grateful to our Paul Mitchell Schools for giving me such a big stage and platform for such important causes.

Paul Mitchell Schools Provide Hurricane Relief

To make a difference and help our fellow beauty professionals who’ve been affected by Hurricane Helene, Paul Mitchell Schools (through our FUNraising for the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation) have donated $38,000 to the Professional Beauty Association’s (PBA) Disaster Relief Fund. We’re also prepared to allocate more if needed.

Over the years, the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation and Paul Mitchell Schools have been one of PBA’s most loyal donors, with over $316,000 to date. We started in 2005 when we raised and donated $57,000 to hairdressers affected by Hurricane Katrina, and our FUNraising campaign has continued to provide funds that are readily available at a moment’s notice.

The damage from this event is widespread and catastrophic. Countless people have lost everything from homes, workplaces, and salons to clothing, cars, and professional tools. Families are stuck on mountaintops and can’t get down because roads no longer exist. The entire town of Chimney Rock, NC, has been wiped off the map.

And yet, PBA is there for every member of our incredible beauty world – to stand by them, help them, and get them back on their feet.

As of yesterday, PBA had already awarded nearly $50,000. That number is certain to grow as they work through the huge numbers of applications that have already poured in.

To the entire professional beauty industry: if you are fortunate enough to have a roof over your head and a workplace to earn a paycheck today, I’m calling on you to help support this important cause through your personal donations and fundraisers.

And to those who’ve been devastated by this event, I urge you to apply for funds through the PBA Disaster Relief Fund.

The maximum $1,000 grants may not sound like much, but it can make an immediate difference and remind our devastated beauty industry friends that their industry loves and cares about them. Please donate today.

Kathy Buckley – Presidential Lifetime Award for an Unstoppable Journey of Advocacy and Inspiration!

Those who know me know that I am always on the hunt for amazing mentors and heroes, mostly because I need a lot of help. My niece told me about Kathy Buckley after hearing her speak at her university over 15 years ago. I found Kathy's website, sent her an email, which she immediately responded to, and went to Kathy's house to interview her for my podcast series. Kathy opened the door, threw her arms around me, and we've been inseparable ever since.

Kathy played a very important role in the life of my beautiful 96-year-old mother who died in December. Kathy continuously showed my mom immense love, lots of humor that kept my mom joyful, and sincere compassion. My mom also loved Jay Leno, so of course Kathy arranged for my mom to spend time with him.

Because of the beautiful work that Kathy does with No Limits to help provide auditory, speech, and language training for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, our Paul Mitchell Schools have donated over $1 million. In my mind, it's a very small token to show my love and respect for this beautiful woman.

50+ Year Friendships!

I love having history with friends from my childhood. These two beautiful women, Ann and Colleen have always, always been a source of love, friendship, and support, even through the difficult, hilarious, bully-ridden, discovery part of growing up.

I hope all of you have history like this with certain friends.

At our little reunion yesterday, we reminisced about the good, the sadness (from friends who have died), and the hilarious stories that no one who was not there would appreciate!
