On this day, May 22nd, in 1914 Sun Ra arrived on our (relatively) fair planet for what ended up being a 79 year stay. We're unsure if it was a statement of how much he liked the planet Earth or if he simply felt he was needed here that badly. Since his departure on May 30th 1993, we've been enjoying the plethora of music he left us for musical study and enjoyment. Here we wait for his return. Happy arrival day.

An iconic demonic slice of Saturnian splendor, now on lime green vinyl!

Spiritual implications aside, the title might secondarily have been an inside joke: in the early 1950s, while coaching doo-wop vocal groups in Chicago, the pre-Sun Ra Sonny Blount insisted that his young protégés call him "Lucifer."

These tracks capture Ra’s electronic peregrinations during the 1970s and ‘80s. The Arkestra occasionally makes a cameo appearance but Ra commands the spotlight, not so much composing music as painting soundscapes with electronic keyboards.

This is Triple-A Ra: Audacious, Aggressive, Adventurous. These tracks capture Ra's electronic peregrinations during the 1970s and '80s.

These works also have the character of soundtracks for non-existent films. There is tension and mystery, chaos and disorientation. There are ominous crescendos, futuristic forebodings, and thematic non sequiturs. Animation, science fiction, surrealistic noir — listen to these works with your eyes shut, or in a darkened room, and imagine the action.

They’re coming! The Hippies! The Acid Heads!

BLONDE ON A BUM TRIP is a frank, revealing look at the L*D generation! Instead of using the usual jazzy instrumental library music or generic elevator pop, The Vagrants, The Bit’ A Sweet, and to a much greater extent The E-Types, were recruited to propel the film's lysergic journey.

This serves as the first ever soundtrack to this film as well as a doctorate level exploration into The E-Types’ “Put The Clock Back On The Wall.” On hallucinogenic swirl vinyl!

A career spanning selection from Velvets through Drama Of Exile and includes an appropriate Doors cover!

These recordings were subsequently issued as a tribute to Nico's unique talent. She was a female artist at a time when rock was mostly male dominated, and a German during an era when few non-British or American acts were given the scope to make their mark on the world stage.

The sheer eeriness and other-worldliness of her repertoire mark her out as one of the most extraordinarily original performers of the rock era. In stores today!

More glorious solo piano Ra from the far corners of the vaults!

The album includes four additional solo piano works from an unlabeled tape that featured Ra jamming with a drummer, most likely famed Ra percussionist Samarai Celestial.

When the quarter-inch, quarter-track tape was flipped, Celestial had taken a break and Ra vamped four solo numbers on piano, after which Celestial returned and the jam resumed. The solo pieces were extracted and added to the Axis set. Same artist, roughly the same period, same city, similar feel as the Axis recordings!

Tomek laid down Love & Hate in A&R’s luxurious confines. “It was originally designed to have orchestras record soundtracks to movies,” remembers Lamprecht, “with 25-foot ceilings and huge movie screens.”

Jazz trumpet/flugelhorn giant Tom Harrell, who was already starting to make a splash at the time, stands out among the handful of additional contributors, sliding snakelike into the galloping synth-funk of “I Gotta Fever” [sic], the slap-bass slow burner “Ambition,” and the salsa-meets-new wave wallop of “Life is Good.”
