Happy Holidays to everyone in the literal “world” from everyone on the worldwide staff of Drum Corps World!

The conclusion to 2024 marks my 50-year ownership of Drum Corps World, a publication I first became involved with in the first issue, October 1971, distributed at the American Legion Uniformed Groups Congress in Indianapolis, the same meeting DCI became an organization!

At this point there thankfully are no reports of corps having difficulties and hopefully every one will have a big membership on the starting line when the summer competitions get underway in about seven months. We’ll see some new DCI Open Class, All-age and SoundSport groups, too!

DCI’s annual “Janual” meeting of the board of directors, show sponsors and drum majors bill be taking place. We’ll have a report on details that will affect the corps and fans during the 2025 tour in the February issue.

The DCI 2025 tour schedule is included in this issue so fans can make tentative plans for shows.

In the meantime, enjoy the holidays and look forward to a great 2025 season!

Did you know? Pass the syrup . . . In the mid-1970s, the Village Inn Pancake House in Glenwood Springs, CO, ran a promotion in conjunction with the DCI-sanctioned “Drums Along the Rockies” contest there. The restaurant called it “Drums Along the Pancakes.”

Dear readers:

This issue includes reports on the Drum Corps United Kingdom, British Youth Band and European Championships, held during the final weekends of September and early October. The European event was live-streamed. I hope many were able to view it live or sometime later.

The worldwide activity began spreading across the Atlantic in 1974 and, over the years, there have been literally dozens of corps start-up in Scotland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium and France. Unfortunately, the majority of the organizations are no longer in existence, some because of unsuccessful mergers, making trips to the U.S. and, more recently, the COVID pandemic that severely affected many organizations. So the European events were represented by a considerably smaller number of active groups.

Thankfully, the activity is still quite active in Japan and Indonesia as well as here in the United States and Canada. I hope to have reports on those country’s championships in the January issue.
In the meantime, the movement keeps progressing in North America!
