Did you know? All hail the Appleknockers . . . The very first drum and bugle corps to have its named mentioned on national television in the 21st Century was New York’s Geneva Appleknockers. It was January 1, 2001 and CBS television star Christopher McDonald was doing commentary for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade marching band spectacular pre-show. He mentioned that he had quite a fondness for the Appleknockers back in his youth.

Did you know? First shall be last . . . A rather unusual thing happened to the 1976 DCI Championship Class A Champion Wausau Story from Wausau, WI. The corps won its title that night despite taking dead last in the marching caption.

Did you know? The heat goes on . . . The weather was brutal at the 1991 DCI East Prelims, with the actual air temperature reaching 106 degrees. One member of Carolina Crown passed out just as the corps left the field. She was actually declared legally dead for nearly one minute before being revived. Fortunately the young lady made a full recovery.

Did you know? A couple of bright guys . . . The 1983 Archer-Epler Musketeers featured the song “Sparkle” in their field repertoire, which was fitting since their horn instructor was named Joe Light and their marching instructor was named Dave Light.

Did you know? Screech . . . On August 7, 1978, the West Park Plaza shopping center in Ontario, OR, sponsored the “highest note ever performed worldwide in the open air by one soprano bugler” contest. There was no report on just who won the contest. Perhaps only dogs could hear who hit the highest note.

Did you know? Naughty, naughty . . . Many drum corps fans may not remember that the 1977 DCI Championship Finals were held on a Friday night, to accommodate the American Legion Nationals which were also in Denver at the same time. The Legion had its national championship on Saturday night. At that contest, the Hutchinson, KS, Sky Ryders were the first corps on the field at finals. As usual, the corps was given a score by the GE judge immediately following their performance. His sheets were signed and verified. Several corps later, that same judge sent a handwritten note down to the tabulator table to drop the corps’ GE Brass score by 0.6. This score change eventually dropped the corps behind the General Butler Vagabonds and cost the Sky Ryders $300.00 in prize money.

Did you know? Food, glorious food . . . The date: September 10, 1960. The place: Hamilton, ONT. The event: the 1960 Canadian National Championship. The Grantham, ONT, junior corps had four of its members get stick on the field in the middle of their show, while another seven got sick while performing at the end of the show. All 11 had eaten at the same restaurant earlier in the day and had gotten food poisoning. The members were rushed to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Amazingly the corps finished in third place for the night, just 3.5 points behind the champion Toronto Optimists.
