Hello friends; it's me. This is the last you'll hear from me on Facebook, for a while. It's been decided that I can't defend myself.

My story? In my naive and mostly misspent youth, I determined that I was going to be a troubador. Having no earthly idea how to go about becoming one of those, I decided to simply take my guitar everywhere I went and play music for anybody who asked, and play any request, whether I knew it or not. As long as they could hum a few bars. Over the next ten years or so, the plan worked out pretty good. Except for that night I played a biker party and didn't know Born To Be Wild. I still have scars from the multiple gunshot wounds. Long story, but the upshot is they were funnin'; they weren't even trying to hit me, but they was really, really drunk.

Ray Cooper autocompletes when you type "percussionist"; maybe not the best that's ever been, but certainly the best I've ever seen...at tambourine

I don't even like the labels; 'vocal mic', 'drums mic', etc. Mics are all alike, they all do the same thing, they're basically a speaker in reverse; a transducer, and all that really varies is their accuracy or lack thereof, and there's a LOT more variation among singers than mics, so it might just be a 'drums mic' that's a perfect fit for a particular singer or performance. For my money, the lowly SM57 is king. Its durable, it's versatile, it's available. Is it the only mic you'll ever need? Sufjan Stevens' first record was made with one SM57. It made enough money, he bought more SM57s and he didn't buy any other mics, 'til after his fourth album, but mics are like potato chips; you can't have just one. Or CAN you?

There's no such thing as the perfect room, but you only need a good one and a decent monitor situation to hear enough nuance to make a difference, and while today's typical end user is unlikely to be in such a space with excellent sound reproduction gear, wouldn't you want everything sounding its Sunday best in the event of the unforeseen?
God forbid you should have a massive hit and get remastered over and over as new tech comes online.
You can listen to the Zombies or the Doors right now and they still sound fresh as a fricken daisy; that's the goal. I know invoking the Beatles is like violating Godwin's Law, but they used the best they could lay hands on, crap though the lot of it sounds, compared to now, and for a quarter of the cost, but a sound recording is like a land mine; we should build for a better future, in hope it arrives, rather than make excuses for the ghastly sh*te the punters listen on now.
That said, and you take any six vintage Neumann U87FETs and they're all over the map. Loaded with character and 'vibe', they may be, but luck to you getting a stereo match without a pedigreed pair and a graph plot. You don't know where it's been, how modded nor who repaired.
The sonic gurus of my youth, from Tommy Dowd on down have hammered this screed into my musical soul: It's the ear, not the gear. Make SURE you can hear what's being committed to history and do your best not to screw it up.

If you know, you know. The best mic in the world won't fix a bad room. It won't fix a crap monitor situation and it won't fix a bad vocalist. (it sure as hell won't fix a poor recording engineer) But when you configure and calibrate a really great set of monitors, odds are you're gonna sell some microphones, because you'll be able to hear what they're really doing. The same goes for professional grade mic preamps and converters. Yeah, the differences can be subtle, but when you're stacking more tracks through the same system they add up to a LOT. Quick example, I could NEVER get a handle on compression, before I bought my first set of decent monitors. Suddenly, I could hear everything my compressor and EQ moves were doing. It was like that with the mics, too. I could make an entire record with an SM57; it's been done before, more than once. (Sufjan Stevens) When it comes to singers, there's no best mic, only a best fit. So no, you probably don't need a $2000 mic, until you do. But just as certainly, there are mics under $2000 that you'd do well to avoid. Ultimately, price is no indication of quality; making a record is like making whiskey; use a great recipe, assemble the best ingredients you can afford, and try not to screw up the process.

Most of my unforgettable gigs had nothing to do with the zeitgeist. It was like a thing Muddy Waters said. "I get the blues and I just let go in the middle of it". The transcendental moments of my life have been the ones where I got out of my own way, and let the music play ME. I take credit for showing up, every night; credit for hauling the gear, sure. But I'm a lightning rod; an antenna; I'm a conduit, not the source.
