A CSX train derailed early this morning. The Satilla Riverkeeper investigated the accident in person and spoke with CSX, Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, and the Department of Transportation.

The accident occurred next to Kettle Creek, a tributary that flows into the Satilla. Some of the derailed train cars had been used to transport ethanol. As of this morning, there were no spills and no leaks from the train cars. Additionally, the train cars are reported to only contain ethanol "residuals" and are not full of the highly flammable and toxic substance. Nonetheless, the cleanup crew must still be careful, because ethanol (although in smaller quantities) is present at the wreck.

After speaking with CSX, the Riverkeeper was assured that the environmental contractor for the cleanup will be sucking out any remaining ethanol from the train cars and then power washing the cars before CSX cuts them apart. CSX will be cleaning and cutting the cars tomorrow. The Riverkeeper will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that no contamination enters our waterways.

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
World Heritage Site Bid

For Immediate Release: June 22, 2022

This week the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service launched a unique public/private partnership to seek World Heritage Site status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). World Heritage status would further the US Fish and Wildlife Service vision to protect the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and its vast ecological resources for years to come.

Celebrate National Travel week!!!

Sparkling blackwater, the color of dark, southern sweet tea, flows beneath your vessel as you embark on an adventure like no other. Water lilies and carnivorous plants seem to defy physics as they perform a swaying waltz for you on top of the rainwater. Overhead a Sandhill Crane uninterested gazes at you as it glides high and low on the wind, searching for its next swamp meal. The camouflaged heads of alligators rise out of the water in your path like scaly, prehistoric stones leading you deeper into the majestic waterways. The female safeguarding her nearby nest of hatchlings gazes at you warily with small glittering eyes, ready to redirect your path with an incredibly swift movement should the occasion arise.

No, you have not traveled deep into an Amazonian forest, where Tarzan may appear swinging in on a vine. Still, instead, you are deeply immersed in the Spanish Moss-draped ancient world of the Okefenokee Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. A place like no other place on earth...where wild prevails!

Relax or adventure by escaping for a day visit, immerse yourself in nature’s beauty by camping overnight, or indulge yourself by being a guest at the upscale Greyfield Inn.

The National Park Service protects almost 36,000 acres of the island, including miles of unspoiled beaches. Explore the historical and natural mysteries it holds with one of their knowledgeable guides who live and breathe for the adventures Cumberland Island has to offer.

DID YOU KNOW?

The History of the Pecan Trees grown and sold across the United States was born right here in the Southern Georgia city of St. Marys.

Grown from pecan nuts found floating at sea by Captain Samuel F. Flood and planted by his wife, nee Rebecca Grovenstine on Block 47. The remainder of these nuts were planted by St. Joseph Sebastian Arnow in the north half of Block 26.

These first plantings produced large and heavy-bearing trees, as did their nuts and shoots in turn. Taken from St. Marys to distant points throughout southeastern states, they became famous before the Texas pecans were generally known.

The rich history of Georgia is only amplified by the people who have called it home. The country's southernmost original colony has produced hundreds of individuals who would go on to change the world, with some even achieving the nation's greatest honor. Over 20 Georgia-born soldiers have received the Medal of Honor for their actions in every major conflict since World War 2. The Medal of Honor Historical Society of the United States has the entire list of recipients, complete with birth and resting places each one. We thank all those who have served this country and continue to do so.
