Janie Flores Receives Prestigious National Scholarship from the Craft Industry Alliance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHICAGO, IL September 16, 2024 - (BUENA VIDA MEDIA) - Janie Flores, CEO of Buena Vida Media, was awarded a national scholarship by the Craft Industry Alliance for the sustainable “Janie’s Art Journals” initiative created in 2023. Eleven scholarship recipients from across the nation were selected amongst a record high number of submissions this year. The scholarship makes membership available in the leading craft industry organization, allowing creators and makers access to invaluable industry resources and community support regardless of financial means.

Janie’s Art Journals is the latest sustainable art endeavor launched by Buena Vida Media. Up-cycling vintage books and repurposing them into unique art and writing journals seamlessly combines eco-friendly practices with creativity. Other materials used are packaging, vintage papers and fabrics, as well as specialty fabrics and handmade papers sourced from Mexican artisans. Janie has also collaborated with artists like Sharktopia, and Mexican artisans from the Mexico, Cultura and Orgullo collective in Oaxaca to create special projects.

“The journal-making and bookbinding industry has grown into a global market, offering creators, artisans, and makers a platform to commercialize their art. However, the industry remains largely Anglo-centric, with many creators and makers of color still not seeing the financial benefits they deserve. Janie’s Art Journals aims to build on the pioneering efforts already underway to change this narrative. I am often the only artisan of color at the arts and craft fairs I participate in with my unique journals. Joining the Craft Industry Alliance aligns with my goals of fostering creativity, diversity, and sustainability within the arts and crafts community. Janie’s Art Journals are labor intensive works of art designed to spark creativity and joy through an interactive experience of writing, drawing and painting in the journals,” stated Flores.

Janie’s Art Journals is grateful to the local arts and crafts organizations in Southeastern Wisconsin like Retro Racine, Union Grove Market, Highway 11 Market, and Tiny Hooves Pallooza, for welcoming this new venture. These opportunities are especially meaningful as new vendors often encounter limited access to more profitable markets where priority placements are typically given to long-established crafters, and where high entry fees and administrative barriers can be prohibitive. Janie’s Art Journals is also visiting local schools and community centers to introduce sustainable art practices to the next generations.
