Northern Lights Drone Show in Duluth this weekend

This Friday and Saturday in the darkened skies over Lake Superior along the Lakewalk the North Shore Scenic Railroad and Fitger’s are presenting a spectacular drone show of Christmas lighting. A national company, and a leader, in drone show technology and artistry, will fly four shows on Friday and five shows on Saturday; this event is sponsored by the North Shore Scenic Railroad and Fitger’s.

“These are the new fireworks,” said Ken Buehler the railroad’s General Manager.

Of course there is a train involved. The three to four-minute aerial displays will also be seen by passengers riding the North Shore Scenic Railroad’s Christmas City Express. CCX is a story performance and train ride that tells about a young girl traveling by train on Christmas Eve to visit her grandparents in Duluth. The train gets stranded in a horrific snowstorm. While everyone on board is safe, the passengers all fear Christmas will be lost. It’s what the little girl and the conductor do next that saves Christmas for everyone.

The multi-colored drone show will follow the story line of the book, which was written for the North Shore Scenic Railroad and is available in the gift shop. The first scene is a steam train, then a snow storm followed by other images pertinent to the events in the book.

According to Firefly, this is a medium sized drone show featuring a hundred lighted drones that are computer and GPS controlled to form multi-colored animated scenes. The times of the shows are approximate based on the arrival of the Christmas City Express train.

The shows are included at no extra charge for CCX passengers and some tickets are still available at www.duluthtrains.com. Those interested in watching for FREE are welcome to do so. Excellent viewing areas are in the Fitger’s Courtyard and parking ramp.

The Lake Superior Railroad Museum & Train Ticket Office are open daily from 10am-5pm. Train excursions are done operating until the holiday trains start on November 24th. More information below. View Train Schedules Here Daily train excursions are done operating,

Watch out for fake sheriff's office calls

On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said it has received numerous reports of citizens receiving calls from a 218-877 phone number. The caller claims to be a Deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and claims the person they are calling has a warrant out for their arrest and requests payment to satisfy the warrant. These calls are not legit.

As a reminder the Polk County Sheriff’s Office nor any other government agency will accept payment in the form of prepaid/gift cards.

"Breaking Down Barriers" at new Firefly Center this Saturday

Discussions about mental health have gained unprecedented prominence in recent years, and society is awakening to the reality that emotional wellbeing is just as vital as physical health. The Firefly Center is reinventing the traditional approach to mental health care by creating a unique space that not only provides a place for all to connect through art or a variety of community events, but also brings professional mental health services to Fosston and the surrounding communities.

Creativity Meets Health: The Birth of Firefly
Two years ago, members of the Arts & Culture Commission in Fosston discovered that Alluma, a regional mental healthcare provider, was looking to secure a permanent location in Fosston. In typical artistic fashion, the group did what it does best–they got creative! Out of that, Firefly was born. It’s a place “where creativity and health come together in an unbiased, creative environment that fosters community, inclusion, and equality.” The Center aims to create a space where the boundaries between mental health care, creative expression, and community blur, reducing the stigma of mental health care.
Firefly conducted feasibility studies with Artspace, a nonprofit organization that specializes in consulting around financially sustainable, artistic, multi-use spaces. As a result, the Center will rely on income from two main sources–Alluma, a regional mental health service provider who will rent office space, as well as two 1-bedroom apartment spaces available to the general public for rent. Alluma has been working closely with Firefly to ensure a suitable space to deliver their services. This partnership exemplifies the collaborative, community-oriented spirit of Firefly. Other sources of income will include space rental for classes and events, and makers’ space rentals.
In June 2023 Firefly Center for Art & Wellbeing filed for 501c3 status and established an 12-member board, each bringing their unique skill sets to this project. A lease was signed in July construction will begin soon.

A Multifaceted Space for All
The Firefly Center will be a multi-faceted hub offering a diverse range of services and spaces.
● Mental Health Care
Alluma will rent approximately 1200 sq ft that will include a reception area, offices, and conference space in which to provide professional mental health services.
● Community Space
Chat, relax, and connect in a warm, welcoming space for all where loneliness evaporates and friendships are formed.
● Art Gallery
Art itself can be therapeutic. Firefly will feature a gallery to showcase the talents of local artists. Visitors can immerse themselves in a world of creativity and, perhaps, ignite their own artistic spirit.
● Makers’ Space
Whether you're a seasoned artist or a budding creator, you'll find the space you need to bring your ideas to life. Unleash your inner artist!
● Rental Units
Firefly is building out two well-appointed 1-bedroom apartment spaces that will not only serve as income for the Center, but increase housing options in Fosston.

“Breaking Down Barriers” Fundraiser
Firefly is hosting a fundraiser, "Breaking Down Barriers,” on Saturday, September 23rd, starting at 5:30 pm. This event promises to be a night of excitement and inspiration, where attendees will have the opportunity to literally "break down barriers" in a symbolic gesture of unity and support. Get tickets and more information at fireflycenter.org.

Securing a Sustainable Future
While Firefly has made significant strides in obtaining capital and operational funding from grants, individual contributions, and corporate sponsorships, the Center’s long-term success will rely on the unwavering support of our generous community.
Firefly Center for Art & Wellbeing is not just a place, it’s a vision–a world where mental health is treated with the same reverence as physical health, creativity is harnessed as a powerful tool for healing, and connections are formed. With your support, Firefly aims to break down barriers and pave the way for a brighter and healthier future for us all. Be a part of the change!

RideMN1 coming through Fosston this Sunday-Monday

RideMN1 Inc., a nonprofit cancer awareness organization that conducts a bicycle ride across Minnesota each September, will be passing through Fosston toward Bemidji on their way to Duluth/Superior! The bikers start at Perley and Twin Valley on Saturday before passing through Fertile and stopping in Fosston on Sunday night. The route will ultimately take them 360 miles in seven days.
"Needless to say, we like biking. But, we also have a cause," says Wally McFarlane, Ride Director. "We want everyone to know that we are winning the battle against cancer. We all know someone (if not ourselves) that has been affected by cancer. We want to encourage people to get screened! Colon, breast, skin. And now Medicare pays for lung cancer screening for smokers and those that have recently quit."
They will be staying at the Fosston City Campground and eating Sunday lunch at MJ Cafe and dinner at the A&W, with breakfast Monday at Hugo's Bistro. On Monday morning, they will be headed out of town on County Road #6. If you happen to see these bikers, give a wave and a toot of the horn - they are biking to end cancer!
For more information about RideMN1, go to their website at RideMN1.org.
