If you’re grateful for the beauty and solitude easily found in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, thank the U.S. Forest Service and the agency’s summer volunteers.

USFS volunteers like Mary and Tom Kroll of Long Prairie, Minn., devote their summers to living in the forest and keeping it safe and enjoyable for visitors.

If you’ve driven along gravel roads during the day lately, unassuming white flower heads amidst the many roadside sunflowers may have caught your eye. The white blooms are closed during the day, but come dusk these noteworthy native wildflowers known as the tenpetal blazingstar come to life.

This herbaceous flower, also known as eveningstar, candleflower or gumbo lily, is drought-tolerant and can be found throughout Montana and beyond.

If you know where to find these unique blooms, make a point to arrive around sunset when you can see the “stars” open right before your eyes.

“Everyone was working on stuff that they want to try out on snow next year,” said Micah Robin. “It helps them progress, have fun, and is a great way to get excited for the winter and get everyone together.”

From the Big Sky Chamber:

Due to increased cases of COVID-19 and the highly transmittable Delta variant, Healthy Gallatin and the CDC are now recommending that masks be worn by vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

There is not a mask mandate in Montana, Gallatin or Madison County, but your business and organization is allowed to ask your customers to wear one if you would like.

The two players from Big Sky contributed greatly this past weekend and throughout the season for the Belgrade Bandits.

Sid Morris was one of the Bandits' best pitchers this season. He led the team in both innings, pitched and earned run average. When he wasn’t on the mound, Sid Morris played third base and led the Bandits in batting average as well.

Ian Pecunies, also from Big Sky, was a key player for the Bandits as well. Pecunies was either pitching or catching throughout the weekend and was a reliable hitter for them throughout the season.

"He said it was the best day ever.”

This is how Nancy Reynolds described young athlete Ridley Brandmayr’s reaction after finishing up a day fly fishing on the Yellowstone river. It seems as if Brandmayr was not alone as all eight participants in the Challenged Athletes Foundation fly fishing camp made some memories that will last a lifetime.
