Sisters Faiza Hashim and Mariam Abubaker conceived the idea for a summer camp souq in 2023. The event adorns the room like a traditional Arab market complete with lights, plants and textiles. Items such as soaps, candles, honey, paintings and coffee mugs decorated with Palestinian symbols were for sale.

“It looked magical,” Kraina reflects. “You really had the feel like you’re in old times walking and shopping, but the people who greet you and sell everything are kids, and everything is made by kids.”

While last year’s souq proceeds all went back to the kids, this year’s proceeds are “for children, from children,” as Kraina describes.

On July 15, the Coalition to March on the RNC assembled for a press conference, rally and march several blocks away from the Fiserv Forum where the RNC was being hosted. More than 3500 people walked and chanted along the mile and a half route in the sweltering summer heat.

The Coalition to March on the RNC includes members of 120 social movement organizations who palpably refuse the Republican’s racist agenda, want to defend reproductive rights, demand peace, justice and equity for all and stand with Palestine.

Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition executive director Janan Najeeb is the first non-Christian to serve as the chair of MICAH’s Religious Leaders Caucus, which organized MICAH’s “We All Belong” campaign. MICAH launched its “We All Belong” campaign a year ago, planning a series of events ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

“We may be children of different traditions but we are the inheritors of a shared wisdom and the brethren of a common humanity,” Najeeb said. “As a Muslim, I draw upon God’s beautiful teachings in the Holy Quran to create that Beloved Community that upholds the dignity of every human being.”

Referring to another verse from the Quran, she noted, “You have been made into nations and tribes so that you may come to know and cherish one another.”

Although inflation has slowed since it peaked in 2022, prices have taken time to go down. In its first decline since pandemic, the national consumer price index (CPI) fell from 3.3% in May to 3% in June, according to The Hill.

Abubaker anticipates that such a trend will reflect reduced housing interest rates in the near future, adding, “Hopefully, with some mortgage cuts later in the year, more homebuyers will be encouraged to come back to the market.”

Politicians usually come up with a solution to a problem then ask the public to support it, Madison said Thursday in an interview with the Wisconsin Muslim Journal. They’re thinking about how to navigate a political win.

“Ryan always makes his decisions from the perspective of the most vulnerable people, often the folks who don’t have enough money to be a core influencer of someone like a mayor or county executive or governor,” Madison said.

Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance recently announced its endorsement of Clancy, 47, of Bay View to be re-elected to the Wisconsin Assembly to represent District 19. It includes downtown Milwaukee and much of Milwaukee’s Lake Michigan coastline, including Bay View, the East Side and Riverwest. One reason—his consistent engagement with Wisconsin’s Muslim community, said WMCA executive director Fauzia Qureshi. Another reason—the values he shares with WMCA, she said.

What surprised you most?

"I think it was realizing how limited we are in our capacity as individuals, and how important it is and lucky we are to have one another. There were situations in my group where we were waiting in line for the bathroom or dealing with the heat or exhaustion or thirst, and everyone was struggling with that all at once. You lose your manners quickly, but if you are patient with each other, we believe that you are entirely forgiven for that. There’s people who are experiencing those same sensations as you yet are still so giving and generous towards others. Their concerns are for the entire group’s well-being. It made me think about how I could reach that level of givingness and care, and that was very inspiring.

The Saudi forces that were there would spray water on us and give a smile while congratulating everyone. They would say “Hajj Mubarak” to us and that brought so much happiness in the middle of such a physically demanding situation. This was the environment that our religion came from, and despite how much it can bring you to your knees, our prophet kept his manners and kindness through that same desert heat. It was a powerful reminder."

In a race with no Republican contender, the Aug. 13 Democratic primary will determine who will represent heavily Democratic District 19 for the next two-year term. The district includes downtown Milwaukee and much of Milwaukee’s Lake Michigan coastline.

Despite being a Democrat and the incumbent, Clancy’s fight for re-election has made him a target, said Janan Najeeb, founder of the Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine and the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition. “Rep Ryan Clancy is an incredibly experienced, well-informed and committed elected official,” she said. “Most importantly, he is one of the very few individuals in public office who has consistently stood for his values and the values of those he represents. He does not cower under pressure from special interest groups. He will not tell you one thing and then do something else, I am really proud to know him.”

Milwaukee’s Baird Center opened its new expansion in May, which features a myriad of public artworks by primarily local artists. These works reflect Milwaukee’s historical, cultural and geographical landscapes. Included in the collection is contemporary oil painter and muralist David Najib Kasir’s two-piece diptych installation “A Pattern of Families Divided by the Greater > Than / Less < Than.”

For the Baird pieces, Kasir returned to painting on canvas while taking a similar approach to “Multiplying the Rubble” in terms of social and political themes. “I focused on Milwaukee refugees, specifically Arab refugees in Milwaukee,” he explains.

The Racial Equity in Journalism (REJ) Fund at Borealis Philanthropy is working to answer that question. The REJ Fund fosters a culture of repair by organizing and distributing capital and resources for journalists and publishers of color. The fund recently commissioned research that analyzes four financial models of sustaining BIPOC journalism and paints a picture of what we stand to gain by implementing each one. Cumulating in a report entitled “Repair, Reimagine, and Rebuild: Modeling the Future of News For and By Black, Brown, and Indigenous Communities,” this work is a call to elevate the necessary components of a media landscape that genuinely serve democracy: community engagement and education.

“A statistic about refugees that stands out is that globally less than 1% of refugees ever settle in a third country, like those who are here in Milwaukee. That’s because the capacity to place people does not keep up with the need to help people going through persecution,” said Kim Khaira, Lynden Sculpture Garden community engagement specialist who coordinates the HOME program, Lynden Sculpture Garden’s collaboration with Milwaukee’s refugee communities. “That doesn’t mean they are ‘the lucky ones.’ The people you meet here in Milwaukee have gone through the most heightened vulnerability risks, whether in their wider communities or directly in their families.”

But they are not chosen to lead the ceremony because they are symbolic of the plight of refugees, she added. Through their participation in the collaborative effort at HOME, their skills shine, as natural speakers and organizers. “I’m happy to always be supportive of people who are interested in engaging with us.”

Milwaukee celebrated World Refugee Day 2024 with two events last week—the kick-off at City Hall and a festival Saturday at the Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 W. Brown Deer Rd., Milwaukee.

Wisconsin Muslim Journal is an independent online news service that recognizes the Muslim community as an integral part of American society. Launched in February of 2018, the publication has served as Wisconsin’s Muslim community newspaper, with a mission to connect the Muslim population of Wisconsin as well as those of other faiths and spiritual groups.
