We were saddened to hear the news that our good friend, Raul Malo, passed away last night after a courageous battle with cancer. Raul was frontman and co-founder of The Mavericks and performed at several of our Hall of Fame shows. While not a native Texan, he was a part of our TXHSA family and had an influential role on the Texas music scene.

In the words of his wife, Betty: "No one embodied life and love, joy and passion, family, friends, music, and adventure the way our beloved Raul did. Now he will look down on us with all that heaven will allow, lighting the way and reminding us to savor every moment."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Raul's family, band mates, friends and all those lucky enough to have known him.

Recognizing songwriters from Texas and celebrating their contributions is at the heart of what we do. One of those talented songwriters is 2011 Hall of Fame member Gary Nicholson. Nicholson is a #1 hit songwriter, Grammy-winning producer, world-traveling performer, recording artist and session guitarist. In 2006, he was also nominated to the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. There are over 500 recordings of his songs in various genres – including country, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass and pop – by such diverse artists as BB King, Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Buddy Guy, Etta James, George Strait, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Don Williams, Keb Mo, Del McCoury, Neville Brothers, Trisha Yearwood, Reba McEntire, Guy Clark, and the list goes on. But his start in Nashville really came with one song included on a classic film. Do you know which one?? Listen in to find out.

Tune in tonight for the CMA Awards where several Texans are nominated and associated with a variety of awards, including TXHSA Hall of Fame members Liz Rose, Ronnie Dunn of Brooks and Dunn, 2026 TXHSA Hall of Fame inductee Miranda Lambert and Texas Songwriters U ambassador Trannie Anderson.

Liz Rose was a co-writer on "Miss Universe," a song on the "Am I Okay?" album by artist Megan Maroney. Trannie Anderson co-wrote numerous songs on Lainey Wilson's "Whirlwind" album, which also includes the hit "Good Horses" co-written by Miranda Lambert. Lots of behind-the-scenes work goes into creating a hit album, song, performance, and video, and behind those scenes are lots of talented Texans.

We wish everyone the best of luck! You're already winners in our book!

Congratulations to 2010 Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame Member Clint Black, who is the recipient of this year's BMI Icon Award. What a well deserved honor! Since his affiliation with BMI in 1993, he's had 22 No. 1 singles, all of which he had a hand in writing. We are proud of this Texas-born songwriter and happy to see him earn this great achievement.

Like many, we were sad to hear about the passing of Todd Snider — a one-of-a-kind storyteller whose music was shaped by deep Texas roots and the writers he admired most.

Though he wasn’t born here, Snider carried the spirit of Texas songwriting everywhere he went. His Texas roots were planted when Snider moved to San Marcos during the 80s and got a taste of the unique sound coming from the Lone Star State. He was mentored by TXHSA Hall of Famer Jerry Jeff Walker and inspired by other Hall of Fame members like Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver and Kris Kristofferson. His songs were recorded by artists including Walker, Shaver, Robert Earl Keen and Tom Jones. He also co-wrote a song with Loretta Lynn that appeared on her 2016 album, “Full Circle.”

“I was a hitchhiker and sofa circuit person. Jerry Jeff made me see that the difference between a free spirit and a freeloader is three chords on the guitar," Snider told Rolling Stone Magazine. Snider got his first guitar and started writing songs after seeing Jerry Jeff Walker perform an acoustic set at Gruene Hall.

Our Story

The Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association (TxHSA) is a non-profit organization whose mission, in the interest of Texas cultural preservation, is to honor and celebrate Texas songwriters who have played an important role in defining and interpreting Texas’ distinctive culture. Established in 2005, the TxHSA produces an annual Hall of Fame Homecoming Weekend celebration, including its Hall of Fame Awards Show – a public event of tributes, performances, and ceremony for its songwriting honorees. The organization also annually honors those who have provided recognition and support to songwriters by presenting its Darrell K Royal Texas Music Legend Award. Coach Royal, the original recipient, spent years supporting and honoring songwriters, and the TxHSA proudly carries the spirit of his efforts forward, in his name.
