Considered the triathlon of the equestrian world, Eventing is an Olympic sport and its three phases are that of dressage, cross country, and show jumping where the pair with the fewest penalties and optimal time takes the win. The Fair Hill Special Event Zone features a world-class cross-country course designed by Pierre Le Goupil, as well as state-of-the-art dressage and show jumping arenas set within the historic turf track’s infield. As one of only two 5 Star events in the United States—and just the seventh worldwide—this prestigious CCI5-star designation represents the pinnacle of the sport.

Kids Cancer Foundation “Makes It Count” During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️💝🐎 This September, in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Kids Cancer Foundation is embracing the theme “Make It Count,” calling on communities, caregivers, and compassionate supporters to stand with children and families facing the unimaginable challenge of childhood cancer.

Represented by the gold ribbon, childhood cancer affects more than 15,000 families each year in the United States and remains the leading cause of death by disease among children. But the impact extends far beyond medical treatment. Families often face overwhelming emotional, psychological, and financial burdens that accompany the diagnosis.

Among the foundation’s most passionate allies is the equestrian community, which has stepped forward with not only generous financial support but also powerful personal stories and advocacy. With unwavering dedication and compassion, equestrians have become a vital force in helping the foundation bring comfort, care, and hope to families in crisis.

Laura Wilson and One Ear Wonder captivated audiences with a road construction–themed freestyle routine that brought the crowd to its feet and earned the judges’ highest marks. Road work signs, flags, and barriers doubled as jumps and even a mock steam roller filled the arena as for duo’s performance. The win is especially inspiring given Wonder’s resilience—despite his lack of ear. But with Wilson’s patient training and trust, Wonder proved that nothing can hold a mustang back. Reserve Champions Elisa Wallace and Nodin highlighted their jumping skills during their “Men in Black” freestyle in final of the 2025 Mustang Classic, while third place went to Sam Rock and Smart Cookie, who featured a “Moana” freestyle.

Wilson purchased One Ear Wonder sight unseen after placing the highest bid in an internet adoption in November 2024, and she brought the flashy palomino gelding home to Maryland to begin his training. “Wonder” was rounded up from the Twin Peaks herd management area in California without his left ear; it’s unknown what happened to it. Despite missing an ear, Wonder progressed in his training with Wilson.

“He is pretty willing,” Wilson said of Wonder. “As long as he has time to think about it and comprehend what I’m asking him to do, he’s game to do anything.”

After developing a solid partnership, Wilson and Wonder aimed for the Mustang Classic. The pair began the competition in impressive fashion by winning the dressage phase and finishing third in show jumping on Thursday. The 5-year-old gelding was unsure about some parts of Friday’s working equitation course, but Wilson patiently guided him through each obstacle. They finished with a respectable 13th place in the working equitation phase and earned their spot in Saturday’s final.

“We focus so much on the health and well-being of our horses, and yet sometimes I think we forget about some of the more subtle yet super important key points in our training,” said Hesslink, who is well into a successful summer season at Splitrock and Lake Placid. “GumBits are a great way to not only reward horses for all they do for us, but also naturally release tension in their mouths and bodies. We do so much of the communication in riding via the bit; horses should learn it is a positive thing and that being soft in the mouth will prevent them from being tense in other parts of the body. All of my horses love them and we use them regularly both training and at the show.”

American Geoffrey Hesslink is one of the hunter world’s most decorated riders, bringing art and focus to his performances in arenas across the country. With the heart of the hunters being rhythm, balance, elegance, and jumping technique, Hesslink uses GumBits to keep his horses soft, supple, and comfortable in their most important point of communication with the rider: their mouths.
