In 2023, La Palina Ci**rs chairman Bill Paley celebrated his 75th birthday and, in honor of the happy occasion, the company teamed up with Oliva Cigar Co. to create a new, commemorative line of ci**rs. Made in Estelí, Nicaragua, at Oliva’s Tabolisa factory, La Palina 1948 consists of a sun-grown Ecuador Sumatra wrapper which, according to the company, was aged for two years. The rest of the to***co is from Nicaragua grown on farms owned by Oliva. The La Palina 1948 Toro is a well-made, box-pressed toro with a silky wrapper the color of milk chocolate. After a four-year absence, Davidoff of Geneva will be returning to the Premium Cigar Association of America’s (PCA) trade show in April of 2025 in New Orleans.
Davidoff surprised the cigar world when it announced that it was pulling out of the trade show in early 2020, but the company was joined by three other industry giants: Altadis U.S.A., Scandinavian To***co Group and Drew Estate (which is owned by Swisher International). Arturo Fuente doesn't release a new cigar line very often, so when the Rare Pink Vintage 1960's Séries debuted in 2020, it got a lot of attention, in part due to its bright, colorful packaging. Created in collaboration by Carlos Fuente Jr. and his daughter Liana, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of every box goes to fund breast cancer research, hence the pink theme. Like Fuente's Hemingway line, the sizes in Rare Pink are all perfectos and indeed some of the vitolas are indeed identical, such as the Short Story. Measuring only 4 inches by 49 ring gauge, appearances can be deceiving as there is plenty of big flavor to enjoy in this tiny cigar. It starts initially as an earthy smoke that segues into a tasty note of dark chocolate accented by hints of orange zest and black pepper. The latest chapter in the Trinidad Espíritu Series from Altadis showcases a Mexican San Andrés wrapper. First it was Nicaragua, then Brazil, but in 2023 the Trinidad Espíritu Series got a Mexican twist with a dark San Andrés wrapper as part of a five-size release. Most of the tobacco from A.J. Fernandez's New World Dorado line comes from a single plot of land, namely the Dorado farm in Estelí, Nicaragua. The typical 6-by-60 Grande size, once considered massive by cigar size standards, has been trumped by ever-larger smokes. Since the late 90s, Aganorsa has been transformed from an unknown organization into a major force in the world of Nicaraguan tobacco. Giant and boutique companies alike get tobacco from Aganorsa, but the operation also produces its own cigars, with brands like Aganorsa Leaf and Casa Fernandez.
