As a reader-supported surf publication, with just six sponsors in each 132-page issue, we’re almost all editorial. We delve into topics that get little attention elsewhere, covering travel adventures, surfboard design, profiles of surfing’s most colorful subjects, and the choicest surf photography in every issue.

Waimea Bay, January 28, 1998. “Everybody was saying this was the biggest swell since ’69,” says photographer John Bilderback. “Jeff Neu and I emptied our bank accounts and chipped in for a helicopter. When we got to the airport, the pilot was giving us the preflight. As he walked over to me, he had this bag in his hand. He went to strap it around my waist and said, ‘Now, if we go down in the water, this is a life vest, okay?’ I stopped him and said, ‘Dude, you can put me down on a highway, put me down in trees, put me down in a volcano, but if you put me down in the ocean today I’m going to swim around the wreck and drown you myself, because you have no idea what this swell looks like.’” Pulled from TSJ 33.1’s “Tales from the Picture Stream,” link below.

Excerpt:

ES: I traded a bunch of skateboards at this shop in Pacifica called the Log Shop. It’s not there anymore, but they were hella cool, and they let me trade, like, 30 skateboards in, and I got this fu***ng plastic Bertlemann Santa Cruz twin-fin Rasta-looking reissue board. Some fu***ng slippery-ass, thick-ass-epoxy twin-fin. [Laughs.]

TF: So no one really helped you get proper beginner equipment?

ES: No, and even if they were, I wasn’t hearing it. I was like, “Nope, I gotta ride a shortboard because that’s cool.” Eventually I started broadening my horizons, but I never connected with longboarding. My goal was always just to attack the lip. [Laughs.]

Frank Latta, Cronulla, 1963. “When Frank began surfing at age 15 he developed his own unique style,” says photographer Bob Weeks. “He went on to win many surf contests, worked with a number of board builders, and became a very talented shaper. He passed away while surfing in 2010.”

On the cover of our new issue: Tahurai Henry, velocity and shadows at Teahupoo. “I wanted to convey the sense of speed and energy that goes along with the wave itself,” says photographer Ben Thouard, “but I also wanted to experiment with light and the silhouette of the rider. A lot of attempts went into capturing this photo. This one stood out from the others.” Back cover: Prototypical Jeff Divine image, replete with rainbow, analog-era film tones, and empty North Shore bliss at Pipeline, 1979. Photo by Jeff Divine.

In this issue, we investigate the properties and mystique of magic surfboards, pull from Divine’s 50-year-deep photo file, walk the beach with artist and scavenger Jim Olarte, rap out with pro skater Elissa Steamer, and view prime selects by South African photographer Ant Fox. Freddie Meadows manifests Norse mythology at a Northern Europe slab, and Harrison Roach, Nate Zoller, and more session right points between blizzards in the Arctic Ocean. With plenty more waypoints along the way, TSJ 33.6 is a trip worth taking. Hit the link to get your copy today.
