On February 28, 2023 two trains collided in central Greece. Fifty-seven people were killed, most of them university students. Two years have passed and the government in charge of handling the disaster has NOT provided the necessary answers to the families of the victims— or to the people of Greece.

Instead of answers, what has emerged over the past two years is a scathing picture of systematic failings, human error, poor oversight, chaotic procedures, lack of coordination and an almost complete absence of truth or justice.

But the worst part of this? More than 70% of Greek citizens believe that the government is involved in a cover-up. Despite government denials, so much evidence points to a cover up.

On February 28, 2025— Hundreds of thousands of Greeks in dozens of cities and towns will come together in peaceful protests, while most businesses will not open— choosing instead to be on strike, in solidarity with the families of the victims… AND IN SUPPORT OF JUSTICE AND THE TRUTH.

Social media platforms will also go dark, including ours— in solidarity.

In the national dialogue taking place about the issue of immigration and the millions of undocumented individuals in this country, Greek Americans often make statements like "we came here legally" to differentiate themselves from those crossing the border illegally. Unfortunately, that argument isn't factual. On the contrary, especially in the 1940s and 1950s, Greeks were amongst the top nationalities of so-called "ship jumpers" or those who arrived in Greek merchant ships at American ports, never to return to the ship after disembarking upon arrival. The issue became so problematic for Greece that a governmental commission had to be formed to try and stem the mass ship jumping that was causing a severe shortage of men working in the shipping industry. This important article that shares an important part of the Greek American experience has been extensively researched and written by historian and professor Alexander Kitroeff and includes a foreword by me, Gregory Pappas.

Descendants of Greek immigrants in America have long boasted that their ancestors came legally. Immigration history questions that belief.

This weekend in 1909, violent anti-Greek riots were unfolding on the Greek neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska when a Greek man was found in the company of an 18-year old "caucasian woman". Dozens of Greek homes and businesses were burned and thousands of Greeks were chased out of their own neighborhood and homes, fleeing to various cities in the midwest.
