Many farmers and vintners in our territory of coverage—Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties—sustained crop losses and soil degradation from the storm now declared by FEMA as a natural disaster area. Their only recourse is to take out interest-bearing loans to support their businesses. While the loans are helpful in the short-term, they put the burden of the climate crisis on our food and drink producers. We need to do better for our Connecticut farmers.

For our readers who asked for ways to help the Ashville community.
Thank you.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many beloved Asheville and Buncombe County businesses have been deeply affected by the storm. While the community comes together to rebuild, you can lend a helping hand from afar by shopping at these businesses' online stores or contributing to fundraising efforts.

It was a packed house at the Fairfield County Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting, held at Jones Family Farms last night. The need for long-awaited policies and support for CT’s farmers suffering crop losses, infrastructure damage and income loss from extreme weather events were topics of primary concern. Farmland conservation priorities were also addressed by local leaders and Aspetuck Land Trust.

We're excited to announce that our winter issue is out and available right now!

In it, we chat with some small restaurant owners about the critical role their local communities play in making them successful, and we take a deep dive into red meat: is it really as bad for your health as some people make it out to be? Of course, we've also got a bounty of holiday recipes, including that coquito on the cover (made and shot by Meera Seetharaman). Nope, that's not eggnog! But it might be your new favorite drink, this holiday season.

Once every 5 years, a new national Farm Bill is instituted -- the next one arrives in 2023. This bill has profound effects on the way government money is used to support agriculture across the country, including here in Connecticut. If you believe organic agriculture is a priority and you'd like to make your voice heard, join CT NOFA this Saturday for an opportunity to develop a platform that will be presented to Connecticut legislators.

Learn more about the Farm Bill here: https://ctnofa.org/2023-farm-bill-what-it-means-for-nofa-and-you/

The new national farm bill is on the horizon. Want to have an impact on what goes into it? Join us on September 10 at The Hickories in Ridgefield from 3pm to 6pm for NOFA’s Farm Bill Listening Session. Attendees will be given the opportunity to express concerns about and recommendations for the development of the bill. NOFA will present this feedback to Connecticut legislators for consideration and use it to help inform our organization’s own official position on the bill. Register here - https://ctnofa.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/ctnofa/eventRegistration.jsp?event=1753 - and join us in September.

Additionally, CT NOFA staff and members will be offering field presentations on seed saving, composting and microscopy, high tunnels and fencing, and regenerative agriculture. Afterward, join us for an informal reception to meet with other members of Connecticut’s organic farming community and enjoy a locally-sourced barbecue, courtesy of Sub Edge Farm in Farmington.

Industrial agriculture has big money and an army of lobbyists to help it sway aspects of the farm bill in its favor, and what’s good for corporate-scale growing operations is unlikely to benefit our organic farming community. This listening session is one way we can express and present our needs for the farm bill. We hope you’ll join us and help show Connecticut legislators that we are a large, diverse group of constituents whose needs are of equal importance.

Recycling, what's it good for? In terms of plastic, the answer unfortunately is NOT MUCH. In our spring issue, we opened with a letter from our publisher that spoke to the great fraud of plastic recycling: behind all of the marketing, the truth is that virtually NONE of the plastic Americans put into the recycling bin actually gets recycled. Not ever!

Our publisher's letter was inspired by a recent NPR investigation that helped to uncover the recycling lie that we've all been fed for decades, and we want to share that story with you. We hope you'll learn a thing or two from the podcast, and that you'll give greater consideration to reducing plastic purchases and use in your life.

Recycling plastic has never worked very well. So who convinced us this was a good idea? In this episode, we might have the answer. | Subscribe to our weekly newsletter here.

From our winter issue, check out the story behind the East End NRZ Market & Café. Read about the challenges they faced - and overcame - in order to bring healthy, nourishing food to an historically underserved part of Bridgeport, and how their recent partnership with High Ridge Hydroponics portends even greater things for the future.

Imagine taking two or three buses just to go grocery shopping. What if your only accessible food was from a convenience store or a fast food restaurant? Unfortunately, that can often be the case for those who live in low-income neighborhoods, many of which lack a nearby grocery store. An estimated 1...

Our winter issue is just about to hit shelves all over Connecticut! But until copies land in your area, how about revisiting this tasty dish from our fall issue? (Which, honestly, is still pretty darn delicious in the winter.) - Roasted Butternut Squash “Guacamole” from Chef Chrisitan Hunter of Community Table Restaurant fame. (Photograph by Lauren Kinkade.) Dig in!

One of fall’s signature crops is the butternut squash, but you can make more than just soup with it. Try something completely different with this localized take on guacamole that swaps out the decidedly not-local avocado for our region’s seasonal bounty.
