Pennsylvania Governor Corbett's willingness to use the Commonwealth's budget to join the class war against middle and working class Pennsylvanians marks an attack on one of the last vestiges of the "common" part of our Commonwealth. Corbett's deep cuts require us all to make a decision about our future. Will we suck it up and take another one on the chin? Will we fight back? Will we defend those p

ublic goods that invest in the future, that provide opportunities for all citizens? The powerful rallies in PA over the past several weeks have been encouraging, for sure. However, I believe that the only thing that will ensure that we, to borrow a phrase from Rick Smith, "live to fight another day," will be our willingness to organize and sustain our fight for the weeks, months, and years ahead. I think we are at a point where we need to begin networking our networks in a "hub" of sorts, to "assemble our chorus" in the words of Clark and Van Slyke in their book *Beyond the Echo Chamber.* Time to build an alternative "press" that is rooted in the local context of Kutztown and PA, but makes use of our digital networks. A Glocal, progressive media site. So, I figured, what the hell...let's give it a shot. Raging Chicken Press is that shot. So, let me "formally" announce the launch of a new alternative media project: the Raging Chicken Press. The goal is to have a polished version ready to go by the beginning of fall 2011. However, I have learned most of what I know about blogs and social networking by actually using blogs and social networks. So, it made more sense to get this little puppy up and running immediately. I mean, we're in the midst of a serious battle for the future of public education and public services in Pennsylvania. The Commons are under attack. Seems that a little messiness is in order. So, consider this a call for participation as well as a call for readers. I am looking for:

writers, photographers, artists, podcasters, media activists, cartoonists, graphic designers, grant writers, bloggers, and people who are just plain pi**ed off at the attacks on the middle and working classes happening all across the country right now. I'm looking for Kutztown students, faculty, staff, community members, or people just invested in the struggles we are facing. Raging Chicken Press is a progressive, alternative, political project. If you have an aversion to democracy, social justice, and activism, then Raging Chicken Press is probably not for you. I am seeking those who want to help build a media site that is part of building a social movement, not one that simply reports. Oh, yeah, the name. Why "Raging Chicken"? Well, for those of you not from the Kutztown area, if you look at the clock tower of KU's Old Main building from a particular angle, it looks like a pi**ed off chicken. The tower can be seen for miles around. I played around with different versions of "Golden Bears" or just bears, but a few years ago KU introduced Avalanche, the friendly and cuddly mascot who parades around the sidelines during games. Our current times seemed to demand less snuggle. So, move over Avalanche, make way for the Raging Chicken!

The amazing story about some amazing people who organized on our Pennridge School District community and took back our school board from the Moms for Liberty extremists. A huge thanks to Kathryn Joyce for this excellent piece in Vanity Fair. And an even bigger thanks to the amazing parents and community members who won what many thought was an impossible fight.

And my kids thank you too.

“It hit us like a ton of bricks,” one local mother says of the antidiversity policies and curricula that swept her school district in Bucks County. In response, a federal complaint filed by community members on behalf of students could be a national “blueprint” for resistance.

We also talked about the significant losses by Moms for Liberty-backed school board candidates in this November's elections - both here in PA and across the country. This week, we're focused on the critical election this coming Tuesday, Nov. 7 - at stake the future of school boards in Pennridge School District, Central Bucks School District, Council Rock School District, and others. Not only that, but protection for abortion and voting rights is on the ballot with control of the PA Supreme Court up for grabs. Also, the fight to keep a Democratic Party majority on the Bucks County Board of Commissioners is alive and well.

Friday Politics Roundup | Debt limit bill; Big Oil; Gannett strike; climate crisis; wildfires; DePasquale announces; theater kids fight back with joy.

Debt limit deal passed in the Senate now awaits Biden’s signature. Another DC drama fest comes to a close. Losers in the deal are the poor, student debt holders, the IRS, and our planet. Winners include the uber-rich, Big Oil, and business-as-usual. Part of the debt limit deal ensures students will start paying their loans again at the end of the summer. And, Manchin will get his pipeline. In a separate attack on student debt holders, the U.S. Senate voted to block Biden’s student loan relief package. Biden says he’ll veto. The U.S. economy adds 339,000 jobs in May, way beyond economists’ expectations. Hundreds of Gannet newspaper journalists are set to walk off the job in protest of the company’s leadership and deep job cuts. A new report shows that the world’s wheat supply may be vulnerable to crisis due to climate change. Demonstrating once again that our justice system is built for the rich, the Sacklers will not face any personal liability for the billions they made fanning the flames of the opioid crisis. Eugene DePasquale announces he will run for Attorney General. New Jersey closes sections of the NJ Turnpike due to wild fires. And Philadelphia was covered in haze this week for the worst wildfires in Nova Scotia’s history. Mike Gambone has a great review in the Bucks County Beacon of a new book on the John Birch Society by Matthew Dallek. And teens in Fort Wayne, IN point the way. After their play, “Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood” was canceled by their school, the teens raised money and put it on anyway. “Marian” is a “gender-bending take on Sherwood Forest’s beloved bandit,” .was canceled because of its LGBTQ content. Dining workers are fighting to win their union and put an end to low wages, disrespect, unaffordable health insurance, and chronic short-staffing. They are fighting to improve their jobs so they can better serve students.

I was inspired to "unleash" my creative innovation energies when the Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education Chancellor told an open Zoom town hall at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania today that PASSHE universities need to just wildly experiment and do like they do in the tech industry and "fail fast." His words, not mine. So, in the spirit of being disruptive, I offer the world this little sketch.
