Journey Films is pleased to announce that SABBATH has won two awards.

First is the 2024 Wilbur Award for the Best in Broadcast Television (Long Form). The Wilbur Award is given annually by the Religion Communicators Council and honors the best in secular media in "communicating faith and religion – with fairness and professionalism, honesty and respect."

The Christopher Award, now in its 75th year, celebrates "resilience, faith and our 'better angels.' The well known motto of The Christophers is: "It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." SABBATH won for Best in TV, Cable and Streaming.

Requiring rest, rather than work, is still a radical idea.

Bergen County, New Jersey, is one of the wealthiest counties in one of the country’s wealthiest states. The county also has some of the most restrictive blue laws on the books, banning the Sunday sale of all sorts of items. “Critics of blue laws have long argued that they benefit only those individuals who attend religious services on Sunday, not the community at large or creation more broadly. But secular labor unions fought for Sunday closures as a way of guaranteeing time off for weary workers,” Casey Cep writes. A documentary on American Public Television is promoting reconsideration of how Christians and others observe a Sabbath day each week. It’s not about taking a nap, but rather rest, restoration and personal and communal well-being.

Question: How does it go when you try to practice the counter-cultural ways of rest?

A Video: How do we rediscover rest, worship, and community in a post-pandemic world? PBS filmmaker Martin Dolbmeier's latest work, The Sabbath is now available at Journey Films.

A Prayer: O God, our Creator and Redeemer, help me to realize my need for sabbath time in my busy life. Please give me a hunger for sabbath time so I can spend more time with you, my family, and my faith community. Amen.

A Reflection:

It often doesn't feel normal to rest. It feels uncomfortable not to be busy.

Sabbath practices are not what our culture or economy teaches us to do with our time. Observing sabbath is scary because it means slowing down to examine what we’re doing with our lives, why we’re doing it, and who we are.

Sabbath, when practiced regularly, makes us realize what we’ve called “living” isn’t actually living at all.

How are you living? How are you sabbathing?

A Resource: Here's a free template for discerning your summer sabbath plan.

On the journey with you,
dana

This question, prayer, and reflection comes from Upper Room Books' New Every Morning Reflections and are based on my book For Sabbath's Sake: Embracing Your Need for Rest, Worship, and Community (Upper Room Books, 2017)

Last year, we hosted documentary film maker Martin Doblmeier of Journey Films, who spent time interviewing our staff about our farm's Shmita (agricultural Sabbath) practices. Martin went on to create a feature-length documentary about Shabbat called "Sabbath," which aired earlier this month on PBS. It is a meaningful exploration into this ancient practice, and a deep dive into the ways it is observed and interpreted by different spiritual communities around the country. We are featured in Part 2, starting around minute 42, and really recommend you check the whole film out! Watch it for free: www.journeyfilms.com
