Excerpt from the Essay in the book by Aubrey Mejia-
The incessant mechanical whirring. The rhythmic clicking of machinery turned off and on. The cold and clinical air and the faint scent of disinfectant. A small, plastic cup of freshly
cubed watermelons.
In September and October of the year 2020, fires, carried by the Santa Ana winds, swept over and ravaged the California hillsides during record breaking heatwaves.
Meanwhile, a global pandemic kept millions of citizens around the world locked in their homes. Alongside this, Andrew
Alcasid sat in his own kind of isolation in the Bone Marrow Transplant unit at the Jacobs
Medical Center at the University of California, San
Diego.

’s HEAVY LEVITY opens [Fri 3/18] at SWISH. Join us, 6-9pm for the show’s opening reception.

Shown above: “HEAVY LEVITY”. 18” x 24”. Oil on canvas. White oak frame.

By Jonny Alexander

This exhibition’s foundation builds from six substantial oil works on canvas. Half of the paintings point to themes on consumption and its effects on us and our environment. While the other half, showcase themes of emotionality, accepting change, and navigating our inner worlds. Landscapes juxtaposed with domestic scenes set the stage for an array of human-made objects. Seemingly mundane, these objects act as a cast of characters playing out the complex narratives of each painting. Within the six main images are references to other abstract works in the exhibition. An unrecognizable shape painted two-dimensionally in the landscape of one piece sits adjacent as a tangible solid-stone sculpture. One painting of a living room scene depicts a ‘painting’ on the wall. Elsewhere in the exhibition that painting can be found at full scale. The works together become connected and self referential, pointing to the overall theme of blurred boundaries and giving a sense of the liminal space that is created when our perceived separations converge. In Heavy Levity the domestic merges with the natural and the line between the two opposing forces begins to dissipate. Social critiques exist within ethereal scenes and moments of banality live in tandem with the surreal, much the way life happens around us. The everyday, if stripped of our preconceptions, can reveal beauty, metaphor, lessons, and wonder.
