I am sorry to report this evacuation planned for tomorrow morning in Stehekin

Pioneer Fire Update: Level 3 evacuation notice (Get out now!) effective 8 a.m. Sunday, July 28, for Stehekin

Chelan County EM has issued a Level 3 evacuation notice for the community of Stehekin. The Level 3 applies to the area from just north of Moore Point through the Stehekin Valley, including the Stehekin landing and west to High Bridge.

It is effective beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 28.

A Level 3 (get out now!) alerts residents to go now and evacuate immediately. A wildfire in the area poses an immediate threat to the life and safety of people in the area.

For residents and property owners, we strongly advise you leave Stehekin. In an emerging situation, we cannot guarantee that emergency responders will be able to reach you if you need help.

Evacuee transport down lake is available daily at 10:40 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (This is an update.) We will update departure times if necessary. Shuttle service to the landing will run one hour before boat departure times.

Areas of refuge, with shuttle service, have been established at the Stehekin Ranch, airfield, Buckner Orchard and Stehekin bakery. Parking is at the airfield, a change from Friday’s community meeting. Please park on the edges of the airfield.

The American Red Cross will establish a shelter for evacuees if needed. It would be opened at the Chelan community gym, 317 E. Johnson St. Upon docking in Chelan, evacuees would be transported to the community gym by Link Transit buses, if needed.

With a Level 3, all nonessential employees with fire teams will be evacuated. EM and the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office are staged in Stehekin.

SR 20 CLOSED: Effective 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, SR 20 North Cascades Highway is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass trailhead (MP 157) due to wildfire activity and fire mitigation on the Easy Fire.

There is no estimated reopening time, and there are no local detours, so take US 2 or I-90.

I know it feels like we just went through this (we did!), but this is what we mean when we say wildfire conditions can change quickly.

Do not attempt to go around Road Closed signs.

------

An update on the Pioneer Fire: The Pioneer fire is located 4 miles SE of Stehekin, WA on federal lands and is being managed by our federal partners with support from state and local agencies. It is approximately 26,137 acres with 14% containment. Structures and communities are being threatened and there is still a lot of work to do.

Both weather and steep terrain are making this fire incredibly challenging. Falling and rolling logs create significant hazards for firefighters. High temperature has greatly contributed to fire behavior and safety risks for firefighters. And smoke has made use of aviation resources also difficult and risky.

Firefighter and community safety is always the number one priority. The incident commanders leading the response are utilizing strategies that ensure the highest level of both safety and success.

Over 780 personnel are working the fire and the state authorized additional fire service resources for structure protection work in Stehekin.

Ground crews are using both direct and indirect tactics. State and Federal aviation resources have been working on the fire but have been limited by smoke. When conditions improve each day aircraft is put on the fire to work.

We in the fire service and emergency response management understand the stress and fear that is involved with any wildfire and especially one as challenging as this one and when people’s lives, homes and businesses are at risk. Please know that state, federal and local agencies are working tirelessly on this fire, and there is a strategy in place to protect the community. As Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison stated so well, “We are all on the same team, working together for the same results -- to protect Stehekin and keep people safe.”

Quick Facts for July 16, 2024:
• 18,731 acres*
• 14% contained
• 14 crews, 9 helicopters, 18 engines, 22 water tenders, 18 heavy equipment

Can you spot the helicopter? Vertical down wash of air that becomes a surface wind, also known as "rotor wash" can cause quite a stir. Dust clouds like this impair a pilot's visibility exposing them to more risk.
