Today September 5th is National Quetzal Day in Guatemala. Where all of Guatemala celebrates it's nation's bird the Quetzal. The Quetzal is sacred bird and a symbol for freedom to Guatemala's indigenous people. This is due to the fact that the Quetzal cannot be domesticated and dies if kept in captivity. It only thrives in its natural habitat and wild. There is a Maya story on how the Quetzal got it's red belly. It happened when a K'iche king Tecun Uman was slain in battle, a Quetzal bird flew down to him as he was dying. The blood from the Maya king soaked the bird's feathers a bright red where it still seen today. It is also believed to be the feathered serpent god of wind kukulkan in disguise by the Mayas. Imagery of the bird can be found in hieroglyphics and in the textiles of the Guatemalan people. The feathers of the Quetzal once were used to decorate headdress of Maya royals and still used today.
