Today is a day to commemorate, celebrate, and honor the life of an amazing man, Martin Luther King Jr. And it is also a time to reflect on what he preached. Among many things, those that resonate with me are his call for peace, love, and equity, not just equality. was 39 years old when he was assassinated. Helps forge the perspective, and drive home something he believed we should ask ourselves— what are we doing for other people? In a society and culture where the majority are focused on themselves, he reminds us again to think of our neighbors and all of humankind. Together we rise. 💕

I hope everyone had a safe and happy thanksgiving ❤️ And the celebrate this shop-small, shop-smart black Friday I picked up a great selection of books from one of my favorite places: Orlando, & Prodigal Summer have long been on my list. I love Vita Sackville-West & Virginia Woolf (Vita is said to be the inspiration for Virginia’s Orlando). And Barbara Kingsolver has yet to write anything I don’t immediately love and think over and over on after reading. And I could faun on and on about Joyce Carol Oats and Mary Shelly but at a certain point I must stop nerding out on a Friday night. (Must we, though?)
Now the big question— which one should I read first?!

Recently finished this gorgeous book by The Great Alone. I highly recommend it... So rich in detail, it will creep around you while you’re reading, the foreboding and brilliantly tall trees of the Alaskan wilderness growing around you, so as to block out the reality of now and trap you in Kristin Hannah’s world.
What are you reading right now -would you recommend it for my next read? Comment below!

May she rest in peace. May she watch us continue the work of many for which she helped pioneered a pathway. There is still much to be done to make our country the place of equal justice and freedom we were mean to be. I believe in us and so did she. Act smart, act up, and make noise for what you believe in. Don’t let powerful forces keep you quiet. Proudly state your dissension, continue to fight for what is right even when you have the unpopular opinion. Thank you for the work you did for women’s rights, minority rights, people’s and workers’ rights over businesses ‘rights’ or interests— we will continue to fight for what’s right and walk along the path you blazed.

I don’t know... as a writer and editor I DO think words are so very valuable. But this was a very kind message from my tea this afternoon and I did want to share. Feels relevant to the day, where there is so much rhetoric from say, large companies and individuals right now, (even myself included) about how black lives matter. —but where is the action? Let’s see the support of bills addressing racism and police accountability from the senators and politicians. Let’s see pay raises to livable wages from the companies. Let’s see benefits and profit sharing. Let’s see more books and more movies showcasing people of color as leading characters, not just supporting roles. Let’s see black businesses thrive, black lives thrive. Let’s live in love. Also— it is pride month, so please, let’s too have some gay characters and stories of life that are not just about the struggle of being gay. (Although this too is a valuable story it should not be the only one shown.) Let’s show young kids that there is light at the end of the tunnel too.

What happened to this man was obvious. He was murdered in cold blood. On video. And neither those who took the video or even the people perpetrating the crime have been held responsible. Where is the justice? Why is the justice system silent? Because one was a young black man and the other white, and the the father retired from the force... What in God’s name is taking so long for the right thing to be done— not just for Ahmaud Arbery but for the less obvious injustices as well, because if not even THIS is answered for what about all the others who die and are prosecuted against unfairly every damn day. What hope is there if this is not answered for? Take action. Speak up. Yell. Scream. Write. Call. We must demand change because he can’t.

Feeling (political) cute, might delete later.
Just kidding, this is staying up. :) I don’t care who you vote for. Just please vote. Vote with passion, vote informed. Vote your conscious and your heart. And if you’re feeling up to it: canvass for the candidate you’re passionate about to make sure you get to see the results you need/want to see.

Creative crocheting for my nephew’s 1st birthday. Had fun with this pattern, originally part of an book by which I adapted a bit. Will make again with a little more tweeking or maybe a complete revival as I learn what I like in patterns and what I don’t. I recently learned more about pattern making and the fundamentals of drafting in shapes first so I’m excited to try to create my own jungle family in the future too :)

“You see you wouldn't ask why the rose that grew from the concrete had damaged petals. On the contrary, we would all celebrate its tenacity. We would all love it's will to reach the sun. Well, we are the rose - this is the concrete - and these are my damaged petals. Don't ask me why. Thank God ——. Ask me how!” Tupac Shaukur

It’s debate night... Democrats, independents, republicans, working party members & those undecided + I hope you have had the opportunity to watch the debate tonight & hear what these fabulous people have had to say. So many amazing, poignant moments of thought & change (and some contentious points of attack and nonsense witch-hunting...) Can’t help but love these moments leading up to a major election. So much potential. I just hope we can fulfill it.

I’m pretty open about my politics. But I do respect that not everyone’s choice will match my own. Still, I would rather you go out and vote opposite of me than you not vote at all, because we all deserve to have our voice heard, and voting is the most basic way for us to do that. That said... I’d like to share a story about my Dad. When I was maybe 10 or so I remember him coming home after voting in a contentious presidential election and my older sisters were all clamoring around him, asking him who he voted for. Now mind you he’d always talked openly about political policy. But he very sternly said, “That’s none of your business and please don’t ask me again. As a matter of fact please don’t ask anyone that.” That stuck with me. How firmly he believed in the importance of anonymous voting in that public opinion could sway someone from voting their conscious... I know sometimes it goes the other way, but over all, I think it’s important that we get to choose if we share that information or not, and since then I’ve never asked or pressed anyone to share their political opinion. (Though I will volunteer mine, because that’s just me, one way or the other, and should they want to talk, they’re welcome to.)
