Chiricú Journal Chiricú has been a publication of literature, poetry, and the arts at Indiana University for more than 35 years. We are relaunching the journal fall 2016.

A student-run magazine named Chiricú was founded at Indiana University in 1976 by the late Chicano scholar Dr. Luis Dávila (Professor of Spanish & Portuguese). The magazine became a venue of publication for poets, authors and artists at a time when there were few academic spaces for Latina and Latino literary expression. For more than 35 years (1976-2012), Chiricú provided a space for new fiction,

art, poetry, and criticism—variously, in Spanish, English and Portuguese. In fall of 2016 IU launched the new, peer-reviewed scholarly periodical Chiricú Journal: Latina/o Literatures, Arts, and Cultures. Conceived in the same spirit as the original magazine, this twice-yearly publication features interviews, creative fiction, poetry, artwork, and photography (30%) and scholarship (70). There will also be a rotating section of book, art, and film reviews.

Juarez native and UTEP grad Hugo Moreno, who now lives in Oregon, stopped by with copies of his historical fantasy novel –– DONDE SE ACABA EL NORTE (Where the North Ends). It's a novel of dreams and discovery where mysticism and indigenous wisdom clash with the power and authority of the Church and the Inquisition. It will also be published in English later this year.

Chiricú Journal is proud to announce its new editorial team.

Since its launch in 2016, Chiricú Journal has quickly established itself as a leading peer-reviewed journal in its field. Awarded the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) “Best New Journal Award” in 2018, Chiricú Journal publishes scholarly and creative pieces, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. By placing cutting-edge scholarship in conversation with a diverse range of cultural production, Chiricú Journal offers a rich and complex view into Latina/o/x experiences in the U.S. and transnationally.

Beginning in Fall 2021, the journal will be led by a new editorial team. Alberto Varon (English and Latino Studies, IU) will take the helm as Editor. Joining him as Associate Editor is Andrés Guzmán (Spanish and Portuguese, IU). Alongside an internationally recognized Editorial and Advisory Board, Chiricú Journal is poised to expand our mission supporting and fostering Latina/o/x cultures and scholarship.

Our Story

Launched by Indiana University Press in Fall 2016, Chiricú Journal is a biannual peer-reviewed humanities journal in Latina/o Studies. We are a unique scholarly publication that combines multidisciplinary research (70%) with artistic and literary content (30%). Our pages showcase the diverse lives of Latinas and Latinos in the United States. We believe that new scholarship, placed in conversation with creative works of art and literature, offers a deep, rich, and complex view into the human condition. We value the many traditions of the Western Hemisphere that inform US-based Latina/o “literatures, arts, and cultures.” While the majority (75%) of our content is published in English, we also honor the power of languages to capture and convey culture; hence, we also publish works in their original Spanish or Portuguese forms. Our hybrid format mirrors the multifaceted, multilingual realities of US Latina/o communities. Even our name, Chiricú, gestures to the “Chi”-cano (Mexican-American), Puerto “Ri”-can, and “Cu”-ban students of Indiana University who coined the term in the 1970s when they founded a magazine by that name. Our journal is inspired by the vision of that publication.

While our format is hybrid and capacious, each issue centers on a specific theme. This strategy allows contributors and non-specialist readers to approach a topic from distinct vantage points, through multiple scholarly and artistic lenses. The highly visual nature of our journal—which features original artwork on each cover and approximately 30 full-color illustrations in each issue—is conceived with the aesthetic experience in mind. Whether one accesses Chiricú Journal electronically (via Project Muse) or in print, we aim to convey the vibrancy of Latina/o arts. Each issue features scholarly essays that have undergone rigorous double-blind peer review, as well as selected creative content, consisting of interviews and works of fiction, poetry, and visual art. We also include reviews of books, films, and art exhibitions.

During our short existence, we have been graced with the collaboration of many fine scholars, artists and board members—among them, renowned figures as well as emerging voices. We twice have been honored by Project Muse: in 2016, with an invitation to join its Premium Collection of journals (one of 16 journals worldwide to be added that year); and in February 2018, when we were named “Journal of the Month.” Our vision is to live up to those distinctions by producing a high-quality, compelling journal that spans disciplines, boundaries and cultures.
