SAD NEWS:

Broadway Legend & the Unforgettable Voice of Oogie Boogie, Ken Page dies at 70

The world of theater and animation has lost a true icon with the passing of Ken Page, a Broadway legend best known for his unforgettable voice as Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Page's illustrious career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on both the stage and screen.

Born on January 20, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri, Ken Page made his Broadway debut in the 1976 revival of The Wiz, showcasing his powerful voice and charismatic presence. He went on to star in Ain’t Misbehavin’, earning widespread acclaim and a Tony Award for Best Musical as part of the original Broadway cast. His performance in the show was so beloved that it led to a television adaptation, which further cemented his place as a star of musical theater.

Page’s deep, velvety voice, with its unmistakable gravitas and charm, was perhaps most famously immortalized in his portrayal of Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). The sinister yet playful character came to life through Page’s vocals, giving audiences one of the most memorable and haunting villain songs in Disney history with "Oogie Boogie's Song." His work on the film ensured that his legacy reached far beyond the footlights of the theater, connecting him to new generations of fans.

Beyond The Nightmare Before Christmas, Page was a celebrated voice actor, appearing in animated projects like All Dogs Go to Heaven and Kingdom Hearts II. However, it was his stage work, particularly in shows like Cats, where he played Old Deuteronomy, that Broadway aficionados will forever hold dear. Page's ability to command a stage with his larger-than-life presence and booming voice was legendary.

Throughout his career, Ken Page maintained a deep connection with his fans, frequently performing at special events, comic conventions, and Broadway reunions. His warmth, generosity, and love for performing were qualities that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of seeing him perform or meeting him in person.

Up Your Geek extends our deepest condolences to Page's family, friends, colleagues, and fans. His contributions to theater and animation have left an indelible mark, and his performances will continue to be celebrated and cherished for generations to come. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary talent, we remember the joy and magic he brought into our lives through his artistry. Rest in peace, Ken Page—your voice will echo in our hearts forever.
