If you are doing business with your clients using third-party apps like Cash App, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle, you should know that the IRS will soon require businesses to report taxable transactions.

Beginning January 1, 2022, business owners must ​​file a 1099-K through the mail or electronically for transactions of $600 or more a year. The new tax reporting requirement will become effective for the fiscal year ending 2022.

The IRS is targeting these apps to make sure that they are paying the right amount of taxes, and it comes from the American Rescue Plan signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021.

Previously, third-party payment networks were required to report gross payments over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions within the current year.

The law won’t affect people who use the apps for personal transactions, such as buying a gift, paying for meals, or paying your half of the rent.
