Something we found interesting . . . When he learned that most braille readers cost over $3,000—some even reaching $15,000—he knew he wanted to make a difference. Driven to create an affordable solution, he developed electronic braille readers priced at just $20 for a small model and $35 for a larger one, well below his initial target of $50. This innovation is crucial as the global population of 36 million visually impaired individuals is projected to grow by 55% in the next 30 years. With 89% of blind people living in low- and middle-income countries, affordability is as vital as access.

On a drizzly day in Grünau im Almtal, Austria, a gaggle of greylag geese shared a peaceful moment on a grassy field near a stream. One goose, named Edes, was preening quietly; others were resting with their beaks pointed tailward, nestled into their feathers. Then a camouflaged speaker that scientists had placed nearby started to play. First came a recorded honk from an unpartnered male goose named Joshua. Edes went on with his preening. Next came a honk that was lower in pitch than the first, with a slight bray. Edes looked up. As the other geese remained tucked in their warm positions, incurious, Edes scanned the field. He had just heard a recorded “distance call” from his life partner, a female goose whom scientists had named Bon Jovi.

Bird vocalizations are usually divided into songs and calls, but these are wobbly categories. What is designated a song in one species may be shorter in duration than what, in another species, is termed a call. Onomatopoeic groupings such as tseets, chirrups, rreeyoos, seeew-soooos, and dahs are also indeterminate: people transcribe the same sounds in different ways, and no bird version of the Académie Française exists to adjudicate. The vocalizations of birds are fundamentally incommensurate with human ones. We have a larynx and two vocal cords; they have what’s called a syrinx, which is a bit like having two larynxes that you can use at the same time. (The New Yorker)

When installed, the green roof cost $23.50/SF—and thanks to the NYC Green Roof Property Tax Abatement Program, the building saved $4.25/SF, totaling $59,500 in savings!

Glad you asked! This incredible initiative, launched in 2008, helps building owners lower property taxes by installing green roofs. In 2024, the program expanded, now offering $10/SF in tax benefits—or $15/SF for properties in combined sewage overflow (CSO) areas. 🌆

Farmers Nationwide Deliver Hay to Support Victims of Hurricanes Milton and Helene

In a heartwarming display of solidarity, farmers from across the country are coming together to help their fellow farmers devastated by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. Recognizing the dire need for feed in regions where storms have wiped out hay supplies and pastures, these farmers are gathering donations of hay and personally transporting it to affected areas. Their efforts highlight the deep-rooted spirit of community that unites farmers, even across state lines.

Responding to this crisis, farmers from as far away as the Midwest and Northeast have loaded their trucks with bales of hay and embarked on long journeys to help their peers in need. Their selfless actions reflect the understanding that farming is more than a livelihood—it’s a way of life built on mutual support.

These hay convoys symbolize the resilience and generosity of the agricultural community. Even as many of these farmers face challenges of their own, they are choosing to sacrifice time, energy, and resources to ensure that others can recover and rebuild. Their willingness to act reminds us that, in rural America, community is not just about geography.

Jack’s curiosity for other people’s stories brings him to Team Humm. Knowing he would never be a bullfighter, and as a recent graduate of the University of Vermont, Jack studied social patterns and solutions earning a degree in sociology. An avid reader, Jack believes that history is one of our greatest assets and that collaborative partnerships build strong communities. He is a natural networker and values sustainable brands.

Jack lives in Chicago. In his free time he can be found with his rescue dog Shelby, at a pick-up game with his friends, at the driving range with his favorite hockey stick or at home working on his 1976 FJ-40 Land Cruiser he affectionally calls Roxie.
