We are excited to bring back our Happy Hour talks to celebrate the launch of Same Sum. Make your favorite cocktail or mocktail and join us + and for an informal artist talk about process and play in publishing! 🍹

Same Sum, our second publication with Peter Happel Christian, is a photobook that playfully explores observation, chance, and the everyday magic of ordinary life. The included photographs are part of an ongoing, expansive project of the same name that began as intentional exercises in observation. The result is a vast collection of subjects and situations—some found, others constructed—that occur in parallel to Happel Christian’s daily life. The title takes inspiration from an Italo Calvino essay wherein experience is fluid and meanings are flexible—that within the finite is an infinite. Similarly, the images in Same Sum have no fixed sequence, allowing for the possibility of seemingly endless experiences of the same images.

The book’s interactive design is inspired by card games and magic tricks; the double coil bound format creates two decks of photographs to riffle shuffle, creating a unique set of image combinations determined by chance.

One of our favorite index pages of all time in Half Wild by Peter Happel Christian designed by Studio Elana Schlenker (2014). Excited to be launching a new book with Peter this summer 🤞 stay tuned for more info!

Peter Happel Christian's debut monograph, Half Wild, borrows its title from a passage in Our National Parks, written in 1909 by John Muir, who contemplated the public's "growing interest in the care and preservation of forests and wild places in general, and in the half wild parks and gardens of towns." Using this phrase as a way of thinking about both his surroundings and photography itself, Happel Christian constructed the work that comprises Half Wild over the course of several years at his home in the Midwest and in Muir's home, Yosemite National Park. In her accompanying essay "Terra Incognita" Liz Sales discusses the relationship between the wilderness and photographic abstraction, a potentially limitless territory.

This week, our longtime collaborator and colleague Magali Duzant is featured on Syllabus (an online publication that explores how a syllabus can become a creative tool). Her syllabus, A Theory of Blue, Duzant "looks at the world through blue colored glasses. What begins as a linguistic question about the color's varied meanings spins out into an assortment of texts, sights, sounds, and actions that evoke blue. Each item represents a different shade, temperature, or gradation that inches us closer to unlocking blue’s mysteries. A cyanometer, a tool for measuring blueness, snakes around the syllabus’s border. Hold it up to the sky, and ponder what you see."

Here are a few screenshots, artifacts, research, and details from Light Blue Desire (Conveyor Editions, 2018), where the research found a home in print. Click the link in bio for more about the book and visit to have a look at A Theory of Blue.💙

From the Archive 📚 Nine Collisions (part of Visible Spectrum, Conveyor Editions, 2014). This is an excerpt from Mark Alice Durant's final essay in the booklet "White — Flower — Fist" 🤍✊🏾🌸 a brief meditation on race and representation among the art works at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Bazille’s flower seller poses a more complicated question than [Manet's] Olympia. She is neither servant nor courtesan; she is a working woman. In exchange for coin, she provides bouquets to (white) men who will offer these scented seductions to wives or mistresses. In her right hand she holds the bounty of abundant nature but her expression belies the serenity of a summer garden. I sense a moment of ambivalent hesitation; is she withdrawing her offer? The painting hints at an unsettled interiority and commands that we pay attention to her gaze, to the tired fire in her eyes. Maybe she has the power to telescope her vision to the present day because although she is framed by floral exuberance, her hand clenches the stems so tightly that it becomes an incipient fist.

From the Project Library 📚 Flood Music by Chad Rutter, published by Mystery Spot Books (). This little booklet is one of our all time favorite uses of two color printing (cyan & magenta) on our HP Indigo press.💘

We also love when artists use music as an inspiration for the sequence and design. 🎼 "Artist books share characteristics with music. They're time based experiences. They have a beginning, end, and rhythm created by both the artist and the viewer. They're repeatable, like a song. Flood Music was made to be a sort of visual musical album, with images in place of lyrics and layout shifts in place of sounds. It could be called traveling music, as it lyrically pulls together moments and places of road trips through Minnesota, Nebraska, and Louisiana over the span of a few years."
