Anyone who knows me or my work knows the immeasurable influence Father Richard Rohr has had on my life.

Rohr is a Franciscan friar and ecumenical teacher, and his words live on Post-it notes all around my house; his numerous books are tattered and torn, as I’ve returned to them time and again, especially in the past couple years.

In this magical two-part “Unlocking Us” conversation, Father Richard graciously expands on just a few of the quotes that have turned my world upside down, sharing his thoughts on what it means to be humbled by the mysteries of faith; how we often misinterpret God as a dictator, not a lover; and how we’re ill-equipped to grasp the infinite nature of God and God’s love. This truly unforgettable conversation left me filled to the brim with love and connection.

Peace be with you.

“If someone is trying to do better, if they're doing the right things we need to build them up not tear them down. NONE of us have clean hands when it comes to making bad choices, some choices are just more complex than others…. “

💚🌺 Copied from a friend...

I went to the pharmacy the other day to get a prescription filled. While I was standing outside waiting for them to fill it, a young man came walking by. He looked up at me, nodded his head and said hi. I nodded back and said “Hey, how's it going?” He said, “I would be lying to you if I told you ‘good.’ I have to go in here and get my Suboxone (treatment for narcotics dependence) and the minute you say that, everybody looks at you like you're the scum of the earth.”
Now he didn't look scary or strung out like the addicts they show on TV, but he did look defeated. A few minutes later I went back in and sat in a chair and was waiting when I heard him talking to the pharmacist. He said, “I'm trying to get my life straightened out. I've made a few bad decisions but I'm trying.” The pharmacist was very professional; he never took his eyes off the computer while he was asking questions. Not once did he change facial expressions or tone of voice, but I noticed other people looking at him as if he was a l***r. He said again, “I'm really not a bad person. I just made some mistakes.” Then, to my surprise, he looked down at his feet and in a half mumble said, “My Momma loves me.”
At that moment I didn't see a struggling addict. I saw a child that was hurt and scared and felt all alone. A child reaching his arms out for someone to pick him up and make it all better. That image was so clear In my mind that it broke my heart.
The pharmacist told him what the cost was and another disappointed look came over the young man's face. Again I saw a child that just found out he had been left behind. He said, “I'm sorry. I thought it would only be five or six dollars. I don't have that much”.
I stepped up behind him and said, “I’ll cover the rest of it.” He turned around with a shocked look on his face and I repeated, “I'll cover the rest.” He said, “No man, you don't have to do that.” I looked at the pharmacist and said I’d cover the rest of it. The young man looked at me but had no words. I said, “You don't have to say anything. Just take care of yourself.” I placed the money in his hand and walked back over and sat down. It didn't take long for somebody to make their way over to me and say, "You shouldn't give them money. You’d better go get it back." I replied, “That's between me and him and what he does with it is between him and God.”
I didn't tell you this because I did something special - the money wasn't that much. I'm telling you this because for the first time I realized how judgmental we all are.
All of us live in a neighborhood full of drug addicts. But for the first time I realized that they're a victim of a bad decision. How many of us have made bad decisions? How many of us thought that we could make that big car payment, we could afford that big beautiful house, that we could gamble just this once? How many people thought they could watch just a little p**n? These too are all bad decisions and they can have devastating effects on our lives and the lives of those close to you. Do I look at all these people the same way I do an addict? Here lately I've seen a lot of that little kid in all the faces I see. What a wake up call.”

Please pray for the people of Ukraine.

Dear people of Ukraine,

Watching your unbreakable spirit is beyond inspiring.
I feel such pity for your plight and then I switch on the news and all I can feel is sheer admiration.
You are the literal living example of ‘grace under fire.’
To face a bully of such size with such bravery and truth, is awe-making.
If you come out of this victorious, you will have set an eternal example to the world.
If you are defeated, you will still have given us all an invaluable lesson for life.
I heard last night a baby was born in the underground.
Surrounded by love, support, help and hope.
The ultimate reminder that life goes on, that a spirt is not as easy to break as a building.

Dear people of Ukraine,
I have never wanted anyone to succeed more and I am forever inspired by your courage.
You may be reminded daily how small you are in stature, on this political playing-field,

but in the eyes of the world right now, you are a giant.

Church is hard.

Church is hard for the person walking through the doors, afraid of judgement.

Church is hard for the pastor’s family, under the microscope of an entire body.

Church is hard for the prodigal soul returning home, broken and battered by the world.

Church is hard for the girl who looks like she has it all together, but doesn’t.

Church is hard for the couple who fought the entire ride to service.

Church is hard for the single mom, surrounded by couples holding hands, and seemingly perfect families.

Church is hard for the widow and widower with no invitation to lunch after service.

Church is hard for the deacon with an estranged child.

Church is hard for the person singing worship songs, overwhelmed by the weight of the lyrics.

Church is hard for the man insecure in his role as a leader.

Church is hard for the wife who longs to be led by a righteous man.

Church is hard for the nursery volunteer who desperately longs for a baby to love.

Church is hard for the single woman and single man, praying God brings them a mate.

Church is hard for the teenage girl, wearing a scarlet letter, ashamed of her mistakes.

Church is hard for the sinners.

Church is hard for me.

It’s hard because on the outside it all looks shiny and perfect. Sunday best in behavior and dress.

However, underneath those layers, you find a body of imperfect people, carnal souls, selfish motives.

But, here is the beauty of church—

Church isn’t a building, mentality, or expectation.

Church is a body.

Church is a group of sinners, saved by grace, living in fellowship as saints.

Church is a body of believers bound as brothers and sisters by an eternal love.

Church is a holy ground where sinners stand as equals before the Throne of Grace.

Church is a refuge for broken hearts and a training ground for mighty warriors.

Church is a converging of confrontation and invitation. Where sin is confronted and hearts are invited to seek restoration.

Church is a lesson in faith and trust.

Church is a bearer of burdens and a giver of hope.

Church is a family. A family coming together, setting aside differences, forgetting past mistakes, rejoicing in the smallest of victories.

Church, the body, and the circle of sinners-turned-saints, is where He resides, and if we ask, He is faithful to come.

So even on the hard days at church—

The days when I am at odds with a friend, When I’ve fought with my spouse because we’re late once again. When I’ve walked in bearing burdens heavier than my heart can handle, yet masking the pain with a smile on my face. When I’ve worn a scarlet letter, under the microscope. When I’ve longed for a baby to hold, or fought tears as the lyrics were sung. When I’ve walked back in, afraid and broken, after walking away.

I’ll remember, He has never failed to meet me there.

"To the small.
To the star counters.
To the cloud watchers.
To the inspired.
To the birds.
To everyone who’s ever cried.
To everyone who’s ever tried.
To those who pull themselves
up off the floor.
To those who can still find
love in their hearts,
even after everything.
To those who paint the world
each day with the colors
of their feelings.
To those who hope.
To you.
Thank you."

My mother is struggling with cognitive issues. I have received no less than 3 solicitations to join Alzheimer's Disease studies this year. Gainesville is a great center for medical research! With the number of aging Boomers, dementia and diseases that disorder the brain could become an ENORMOUS problem in the next decade!!

Researchers are celebrating successful trials of a drug that could not only treat someone who has Alzheimer’s, but also vaccinate people against the mind-wasting disease.

I read this poem at least once a week—it speaks to me every time. I love the way it grounds us in the cycle of the seasons and the stream of human history. I love the way it affirms the potential inherent in all forms of life: “the tree that stands in promise…in the seed’s marrow.”

Today I’m grateful for the line, “What we need is here.” We so often look outside ourselves for the answers to our problems—neglecting the powers we have WITHIN us and BETWEEN us.

You and I don’t command armies and treasuries. But we have the power of our own integrity AND the power of the multiplier called community—powers that have animated great movements and changed the lay and the law of the land.

Today we need to trust those powers to take us where we need to go—just as the geese “abandon” themselves, “as in love or sleep,” to the instincts that take them to where they need to go.

Berry calls this trust “the ancient faith,” which reminds me of a brilliant definition of faith by Mary Jean Irion in her book, “Yes, World”:

Sometimes I wondered if
I had any faith.
I sat down and thought about it.
And when I had had enough
of that I got up
and went on my way.
And that—the getting up
and going—was faith.

Memo to Self: With the problems that concern you, personal and political, keep the faith: Get up and get going, alone and with others!
