Columbus Day, along with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is always observed on the second Monday in October. Columbus Day is a federal holiday commemorating Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ voyage and landing in the New World on Oct. 12, 1492. Columbus was commissioned by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to find a faster route to Asia, and instead “discovered” what is now known as North America.
Columbus Day is not without controversy, as Columbus “discovered” a land already inhabited by millions of Native Americans, and European settlers led to the death of much of the indigenous population.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors Native Americans and their ancestors, and their contributions, while promising to educate Americans about the history of the United States and the people who lived in the area before colonial settlers arrived.

This is not a paid position, but the student will get their own by-line in the magazine, a few hard copies to give to family and friends, and a digital copy of their short story or poem to use with scholarship applications.
