Grateful Dead “Terrapin Station” 1977 Arista - I jumped on board the Deadhead train when this was a new release, and saw them tour shortly thereafter. It’s been at least 40 years since this has graced my turntable, and its weak moments are still very weak, but this is currently a glorious spin, and I’m totally digging

Parlor Greens “In Green/We Dream” 2924 Colemine Records- The new organ trio from Colemine Records features Jimmy James of Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio on guitar, Tim Carman of GA-20 on drums, and Adam Scone of Stone Cash Players on organ. Another fine soul jazz release from Colemine.

John Mayall “Moving On” 1972 Polydor Records - Horn-driven blues and boogie with the likes of Freddy Robinson on guitar, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Victor Gaskin on bass, Keef Hartley on drums, Ernie Watts on tenor and others. Recorded live at The Whiskey A Go-Go on July 10, 1972. John Mayall R.I.P.

Meat Puppets “II” 1983 SST Records - Their best record! Saw them play at Maxwells in Hoboken NJ on many occasions long before Nirvana “Unplugged“ introduced them to the rest of the world. I definitely saw them tour this record. They were a fierce stoner band with a penchant for throwing off sublime country covers. This album is still a five star affair.

Sparks “Live at The Record Plant 1974” 2022 Sound City Records - A semi-official release from Black Friday Record Store Day 2023. While I’m sure the Mael Brothers weren’t happy with this album, it does capture them live in the studio right after they released their classic record, “Kimono My House.”

Todd Rundgren “Runt” 1970 Ampex/Bearsville Records - This is an original 10-track Ampex version of Todd Rundgren’s first solo record after leaving Nazz. Several mispressings of this record ensued upon release, including a 12-track second pressing that came in the standard cover. The market was also littered with easily identifiable counterfeit pressings of this album making it a regular of the cut-out bins for a period of time. It’s a shame, this one deserved much better. Also, half of David Bowie’s Tin Machine back Todd on this record in the form of brothers Hunt and Tony Sales.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass “The Beat of the Brass” 1968 A&M Records - This album was a huge hit in my family, and it included the huge Bacharach-David hit, “This Guy’s in Live With You,” a number one Alpert vocal hit.

John Stewart “The Lonesome Picker Rides Again” 1971 Warner Bros. Records - Stewart’s fourth album includes his version of “Daydream Believer,” a huge hit he wrote and gave to The Monkees.

John Stewart “The Phoenix Concerts” 1974 RCA Records - From the guy who wrote “Daydream Believer” and was also once a member of The Kingston Trio. I had a hand in reissuing his 1968 album, “Signals Through The Glass” on CD. Around that time, I was privy to a private hotel room concert by Stewart and his wife, Buffy Ford. He was a very cool guy to meet.

The Kingston Trio “The Best of The Kingston Trio” 1962 Capitol - Another album my father had around the house that I soaked up as a very young child. This led to the creation of folk collections for Time-Life Music and Kingston Trio collections for both Time-Life and Reader’s Digest Music.

“All-Star Hootenanny” 1963 Columbia Records - The album that introduced me to Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, and all of the other artists listed here, as my father had a copy of this record in the house from when I was a toddler. I used to sit mesmerized listening to this album as a youngster.

Sonny Rollins “Freedom Weaver: The 1959 European Tour Recordings” 2024 Resonance Records - A Sunny Sunday! From our last Record Store Day, a four LP set of 1959 European tour recordings in superb fidelity with Henry Grimes on bass, and either Pete La Roca, Joe Harris, or Kenny Clarke on drums. On this numbered edition of 5000, I got number 50!

Redd Kross “Redd Kross” 2024 In The Red Records - Celebrating 40 years of delivering non-stop, pop-rockin’ nuggets with a documentary and their first double album, this could be the year of The Kross! It’s definitely a contender for best record of the year.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass “Whipped Cream & Other Delights” 1965 A&M Records - That time I met Herb Alpert and told him that I have 151 copies of this album. (Why, is a story for another time.) He was amused and asked me if they were valuable. I told him that he sold so many copies of the record, that they’re out there in almost every record store in America. I added that the music is priceless. He signed a sealed copy of the album for me, and told the audience the next night in concert that he met a guy who has 151 copies of “WC&OD.”

James Taylor “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon” 1971 Warner Bros. Records - I got this album as a gift as a ten-year-old back when it was new, on the day I came home from sleep-away camp. So this album holds very warm memories for me.

Wilco “Hot Sun Cool Shroud” 2024 dBpm Records - A well-crafted EP released in time for last week’s Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts in a limited quantity of 1000. Stock copies will be released later this year. While I did not make the festival, I have my music pal, Michael Trullinger, to thank for picking this up for me.
