We’re in production on another feature length documentary, and we think it's about time to share some of the process!

O Pioneer celebrates three Appalachians as they embark upon an important journey—a journey that unfolds in the midst of a pandemic, civil unrest, and personal heartache. Weaving Walt Whitman’s, “Pioneers! O Pioneers!,” with archival pioneer footage, candid moments from each subject, poetic vignettes, and dream-like animation, O Pioneer asks viewers to courageously champion the pioneer within.

Introducing one of our subjects, Nellie Rose Davis, an avant-garde clothing designer and seamstress with a store front in Thomas, WV. We follow Nellie’s story as she continues to paint, sew, and express sincere empathy for her fellow human even through personal loss.

Tonight is the night! Watch Born in a Ballroom on at 9pm and help us celebrate what would have been Mütter’s 104th birthday.

An excerpt from an interview with Eleanor Fahrner Mailloux:

"On March 29, 1917, my mother went into labor when our small cabin caught fire. She got up and walked over to the main house, a large but dilapidated plantation house. I was born in the ballroom...the cabin caught fire because of the chimney. Stewart, my brother, wanted to go back in and get his high chair. But they caught him before he went back in. When it was all done, there were some potatoes that had baked in the fire. And my father reached in his pocket and he had a nickel and four children, including me...the new baby. There you go. That’s poverty."

To our sweet Eleanor Fahrner Mailloux, you made our lives so rich. We miss you sorely. Happy Birthday!

We’re pleased to announce that Born in a Ballroom will play on West Virginia Public Broadcasting March 29th, Mütter’s birthday.

“I’m a woman of a certain age,” she said with a twinkle in her eye and a memory in her heart. My grandmother, Eleanor Fahrner Mailloux bragged that she can celebrate two birthdays- one on March 29 and one on March 30. Because home births in 1917 weren’t well documented, she was either a midnight or nearly midnight baby. She used this excuse well. To me, she was not a woman of a certain age but a woman for the ages.

Please share! And if you haven't had a chance, visit borninaballroom.com to sign up for our newsletter, order the film, find Hütte recipes, and more behind-the-scenes content.

Our own, Clara Lehmann, has been named a Generation West Virginia Beacon Award winner! This award honors Clara for creating a lasting impact in her community. Many of you have had the pleasure of working directly with Clara over the years and have experienced her genuine kindness, hard working nature, and resilient spirit. We're thankful for her each day and are very proud!

Beacon Award Winner Clara Lehmann grew up surrounded by dedicated and genuine community leaders in Helvetia, WV. In her own volunteering and professional filmmaking efforts, she attempts to mirror their commitment.

Volunteering as president of the Helvetia Restoration and Development Organization, Clara and a handful of volunteers built a playground, restored the museum, preserved cemetery headstones, and hosted traditional events celebrating Swiss heritage.

In addition to volunteering, Clara co-founded the creative studio Coat of Arms and directed her first feature-length documentary, "Born in a Ballroom." Fulfilling a promise Clara made to her late grandmother, the film reveals a legacy committed to ancestry, rich tradition, and community. Clara hopes her grandmother’s story will ignite audiences to treasure the past while designing a fairer future.

Keep an eye on Generation WV's social channels over the next few weeks to get to know the entire 2020 Beacon Awards cohort and learn more about the work they are doing.

Recently, the Journal of Appalachian Studies reviewed Born in a Ballroom! It's a lovely review and can be found here: https://bit.ly/37Gg6ZU. The article is available for purchase or can be viewed through a library or school login.

The article shares many beautiful sentiments about Helvetia + Mutter, and here is one of our favorites, "The arc of Born in a Ballroom charts how Eleanor the restaurateur assumed the role of Mütter, a homegrown community organizer and Helvetia’s matriarch. As Mütter, Eleanor knew everyone’s name, talked about their history, and made her restaurant a place where locals felt cared for. “[People] feel like they can relax and be nurtured here,” Lehmann says, describing The Hütte."
