One of the coolest things about running Glass Spider is the people I meet. One such individual is author R.S. Veira, several of whose books I was privileged to edit. But R.S. Veira isn't just a talented writer. He's also a gifted filmmaker, and his first feature-length movie, Meeting Ms. Leigh, is premiering on Apple TV on June 7. Please join me in congratulating Raphael on this incredible achievement, and be sure to follow the link below to pre-order the movie!

A little about the movie: Meeting Ms. Leigh, an award-winning romantic drama, is the tale of a young writer in desperate need of inspiration who begins an affair with an enchanting, enigmatic older woman during a weekend in Santa Monica. True feelings emerge, and they must decide whether to continue their torrid romance or go their separate ways.

It was awarded Best Feature Film *Grand Prize* (2023 Marina del Rey Film Festival) and Best First-Time Filmmaker (2023 Montreal Independent Film Festival).

Big thanks to The Ogdenite for sharing the fantastic news about our very own Rale Sidebottom and his must-read book "Ridiculous and Ill-Advised."

Ogden has a new Hollywood connection. Local publisher, Glass Spider Publishing, which is responsible for publishing over 120 books of many genres since 2016, has had one of their publications picked up by Noah Centineo’s Arkhum Productions to be developed into a feature film. The book, “Ridiculous and Ill- Advised” written by Rale Sidebottom is the first Glass Spider publication to be acquired for the screen. At least 4 more publications have been or are currently under consideration for film or television adaptation. 🗞️ Read the story by Angelika Brewer: theogdenite.com/news/ogden-publisher-has-book-picked-up-to-become-hollywood-film

In our experience working with authors of various skill levels, the most commonly performed type of edit is a line edit. In a line edit, the editor will identify certain sentences and make suggestions on how to improve the wording so that you can get your message across more artfully.

Example:
Original text: Julie tried to stand up but she got dizzy and had to hold onto the chair so she wouldn’t fall down.

Editor’s suggestion: Julie tried to stand. A wave of dizziness swept through her, and she had to press her hands against the chair back to remain upright.

In this case, the difference between the original raw text and the editor’s suggestion is clear. It’s not just a matter of breaking the block of text into two sentences. It’s a matter of infusing the narrative with a more artistic means of communicating the action. This is what differentiates mediocre writing from good writing.

There were no sirens or alarms to warn of impending doom. Nothing but a case of indigestion, followed by nausea. Then came the intense chest pains. An hour later, Monique Hall was dead, the victim of three successive cardiac arrests. But this was not to be the end of her road. Thanks to a fast-acting emergency room doctor and his team, Monique was yanked back from the brink of death. Fully aware of her circumstances but unable to communicate with those around her, she clawed her way back to the land of the living, and by sheer will pulled off an impossible recovery.

"Reset" is the first-person testimony of a miracle. It is also a cautionary tale that sheds light on how cardiac arrest strikes women differently, and how often it is overlooked by patients and medical professionals alike until it’s too late. In sharing her near-death experience and harrowing road to healing, the author documents what it was like to exist on the narrow boundary between life and death—and how faith in God and love of family enabled her to claim victory over certain death to share her inspiring true story of survival.
