With its overabundance of lake trout and burbot, Flaming Gorge ice fishing can be pretty hot. 🔥 Unlike smaller mid-elevation reservoirs, Flaming Gorge doesn’t ice-up all at once, but forms in stages beginning at the upper end of the reservoir. By the end of December, the area from Firehole down to the Confluence will usually freeze and provide some of the highest catch rates of the season for small lake trout and burbot. Here are some handy burbot and lake trout ice fishing tips:

🧊 Lake trout are commonly found on flats and slopes adjacent to the main channel in depths of 50-80 feet. You can find the general location of the channel and structure with a fishing map.
🧊 Good lures for lake trout include 3- to 4-inch or ¼- to ½-ounce jigs and jigging spoons in white, glow or chartreuse.
🧊 Tip your lures with a small amount of bait, like sucker or chub meat, and either jig or deadstick your poles. Using both options at the same time will help you determine what they are biting on.
🧊 Burbot are typically caught at night, adjacent to cliffs and rocky shoreline in depths of 10-40 feet.
🧊 The best bite generally occurs at sunset, so be sure to auger your holes early.
🧊 Take advantage of the special ice fishing provision that allows six lines when fishing through the ice. (If you’re using more than one line, you must attach your name to each one.)
🧊 Use UV-activated glow lures tipped with bait, and either jig or deadstick your poles a few inches from the bottom. Remember to re-bait and recharge the glow often.

At Flaming Gorge, the daily limit for lake trout is 12, and only one may exceed 28 inches. There is no limit for burbot. You may not release any burbot you catch; they must be immediately killed. When ice fishing, the hole size may not exceed 18 inches. Learn more about Flaming Gorge management, fishing techniques for this waterbody, recipes for lake trout or burbot and more: bit.ly/2V03858

Hey look it’s the sky! Haven’t seen that in awhile.

Just a quick conditions post before the weekend.

Ice/fishing: the ice remains in great shape! Minimal slush to be found, 10” of snow on top so wheeled vehicles continue to struggle though we have seen a few wheelers getting on and off. Shuttle groups have reported largely steady to good fishing still consistently fishing white paddle bugs and jigs. 3-5 fish/hr per angler catch rates. Shuttle service has been BUSY! We are so grateful for your patronage and look forward to getting more and more people out on the ice going forward. To book a shuttle visit www.strawberrybay.com or call 435-548-2261 today!

Snow: 4-5’ base with 10” of very light fluffy snow on top. We’ve refreshed with 4-6” of accumulation this week. We have snowmobile rentals available both trail single and double rider options and deep snow ski doo summit 850’s with 165” tracks! Call or visit our website today for reservations!

We’ve done some exploring around the reservoir today, here’s what we found:
Main marina area 5-7”
Bryant’s fork 3-5”
East portal chaplain 3-5”
Haws 3-5”
Main body middle 5-9”
Renegade ramp 4-7”

Lots of variation in ice thickness, use caution and test frequently, but fisherman are accessing most areas of the reservoir at this point in time.

Fishing report were pretty good today tube jigs and wax worms were the most common successful tackle.
