PRESS RELEASE
FROM THE DOUGLAS COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY
WOLFE CONVICTED OF 1ST DEGREE MURDER

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, following a 4-day jury trial, William R.
Wolfe Jr. was found guilty of Murder in the 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, Abandonment of a Co**se, Tampering with a Motor Vehicle 1st Degree, 5 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Resisting Arrest.

The Jury of Douglas County citizens deliberated for almost 2 hours
before returning their verdicts of guilty on all 10 counts presented. This case was prosecuted by Douglas County Prosecutor Matthew Weatherman. The case was investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department with Sheriff Chris Degase as lead investigator backed up by Lt. Taylor Wallace, Detectives Nathan Long and Kobby Roberts and virtually every other Deputy employed by the Sheriff’s Department at that time. Technical assistance was provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab and the Missouri
State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime control. Special assistance was rendered by Dr. Timothy Huntington from Concordia University in Nebraska in the field of Entomology.

This case began in September of 2020 as a well-being call from a local logger and 2 family friends of the Victim Clarence “Bob” Clark. When deputies responded, they discovered Mr. Clark deceased in his bed from multiple gunshot wounds. Sheriff Degase was dispatched to the scene and while enroute encountered the defendant, William R. Wolfe Jr, driving the victim’s truck. A pursuit followed as the defendant refused to stop for the Sheriff. Sheriff Degase eventually terminated the pursuit as not being safe
to continue. Following the processing of the scene, the defendant was arrested the following day after crashing the victim’s truck. The defendant attempted to create an alibi defense to Sheriff Degase, which led the Sheriff to the discovery of the murder weapon. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab was able to tie the weapon to a shell casing recovered by Sheriff Degase at the scene of the murder.
Prosecutor Matthew Weatherman would like to thank Sheriff Degase and his team of investigators for the fantastic work they put in on this case, as well as the foresight of Sheriff Degase in reaching out to experts in their fields to establish all the necessary pieces to put a case like this together.

William R. Wolfe Jr has a lengthy criminal history including multiple
previous trips to prison. The Defendant was remanded to the State’s custody following the verdict and sentencing is set for October 8, 2024, at 9AM.

This case carries total possible sentences of mandatory Life in prison without parole on count 1, plus no maximum sentence on count 2 and a potential of up to 74 more years on counts 3 through 10.
Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Weatherman would
also like to thank the jurors who served on this case. Over the course of 4 days, they heard some truly horrible facts and evidence. They maintained their composure and performed a truly necessary duty to their fellow citizens.

One of the bedrock principles of our country is that anyone, from any station in life, can have their guilt truly determined by a jury of their peers, drawn from the community they are from and sworn to uphold the law that all people before them are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This jury is owed a debt of gratitude from the citizens of Douglas County for the service they performed.

Sheriff Degase was would like thank the jurors for their service as well as recognizing the long hours and hard work that Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Weatherman and his Clerk Christy Overcast put in on this case as well as Circuit Clerk Kim Hathcock and her staff.

On July 22, 2024 James Elmer Smith III was arrested by Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase on a 24 hour hold for forgery and stealing.
The arrest came after an investigation conducted by Deputy Aaron Box, Detective Nathan Long and Deputy Shawn Wilson regarding a burglary in western Douglas County on March 4, 2024 where numerous items were stolen to include checks.
On July 1, 2024 the bank notified the victim that checks were written on the account to a business in Springfield. Investigators obtained video footage of the subject from the Springfield business. Photographs of the suspect were shared with Ava Police Department Officers to see if they recognized the suspect.
Ava Police Department Lt. Dewayne Butterworth was able to positively identify the suspect from past encounters.
A warrant was later obtained for Smith for Forgery and Stealing with bond being set at $25,000 cash only. Smith has 17 prior arrests for Forgery and Stealing related offense.
Sheriff Degase would like to thank the Ava Police Department and Lt. Butterworth for their assistance in this case, as well as the aggressiveness of the investigation by Deputies Long, Box and Wilson in solving this case.
“The working relationship we have with the Ava Police Department has helped us as well as them in solving many cases in our community and it is invaluable to the success of our departments.”
