"Empathy"
To truly embrace empathy, we must first recognize the richness and complexity of each individual's thoughts and emotions. Just as we experience a wide spectrum of feelings, so do others.
Empathy requires active listening and genuine curiosity about others' perspectives. It involves setting aside our preconceptions and biases to fully engage with someone else's point of view. Through attentive listening, we not only validate their feelings but also signal our willingness to understand them.
Moreover, empathy involves putting ourselves in others' shoes, imagining how we would feel in their situation. This act of perspective-taking fosters compassion and strengthens interpersonal connections. It allows us to bridge differences and cultivate a sense of shared humanity.
Ultimately, embracing empathy is a continuous journey of self-awareness and growth. It requires humility to acknowledge our limitations and openness to learning from diverse perspectives. By cultivating empathy in our interactions, we contribute to a more empathetic and understanding world, where kindness and compassion reign supreme.

It was great sharing the toothpaste/toothpick activity with students during the DO THE MATH 247 Character Building After-School class at King Elementary School. The students were instructed to empty the toothpaste unto a paper plate then refill the toothpaste back into the tube using a toothpick.
It's a lot easier to empty the toothpaste from the tube, but a more difficult process to refill the toothpaste back into the tube using a toothpick. Just like the toothpaste, words can flow out easily without much thought, but it takes effort and care to repair the damage they can cause.
Just as the toothpaste couldn't all be placed back in the tube, hurtful words have a lasting impact, and once spoken, they can't always be undone. Being thoughtful and considerate in our communication can prevent unnecessary harm and maintain positive relationships.
It's important for the students to understand that words have incredible power, especially in shaping our interactions and relationships. Teaching the students to be mindful of their words can have a profound impact on their communication skills and the atmosphere they create around them. Encouraging kindness, supportiveness, and positivity can foster a more inclusive and uplifting environment for everyone involved.
Let's encourage positive language that uplifts and supports others!

Thrilled to have led a fantastic session on Peer-Pressure during the after-school class with Hiatt Middle School students at the Boys & Girls Club. The students learned about it's definition, explored real-life examples and strategies for standing strong against negative influences.
With less than 30 school days left, as an exercise, the students wrote out advice and encouraging words to their peers to finish the school year strong and make good choices over the summer break.
Let's continue to empower our young people to make confident choices!
