The Sentinel & Rural News Story

We, Nicole and Travis, started the Sentinel & Rural News in March of 2014. While the small Wisconsin city of Owen already had a 100+ year old newspaper and we had worked there, new ownership removed all the employees and we found ourselves still wanting to work in newspapers.

Honestly, we had heard about the impending sale and we knew that we would be cut loose. Other businesses in town knew it, as well. When the day came, February 28, 2014, we were told to get our coats and get out of the building. We went out to have a drink and were approached by two local businesses to start a new newspaper. It seemed like a ludicrous idea to have two newspapers in a community of less than 1,500 people but we realized that we could create the newspaper that we always wanted. A retired editor-in-chief of the Seattle Times told Travis, “Create the newspaper that you want to read. There will be enough people who want to read the same thing.” He had also said that it was our job to offend half the people this week and the other half next week. We took the former advice but not the latter.

We wanted to create a newspaper that told good news and highlighted the people and businesses of Central Wisconsin. There is such good news to tell. And not just in the “Twin Cities” of Owen-Withee but all over Clark County and the southern portion of Taylor County, even Rusk County. We started carrying the good news of Owen-Withee, Thorp, Greenwood, Gilman, Abbotsford, Colby, Spencer, and beyond.

So, the Sentinel & Rural News is the paper that we love to read. Happily, there are more than enough people who feel the same.
