Billy D - The Voice of Enchanted Air
Sultan of segue, Billy D brings 39 years of broadcast experience to the airwaves. His is the most familiar voice on KRTN, working in the studio and the remote broadcasts. His love of Raton and the surrounding area is undeniable, creating a distinctly welcoming atmosphere to the radio waves as he talks with his guests.
Billy is active in the community, serving on the board of the Shuler Theater Restoration Commission, Inc., He is often seen at the Shuler Theater running sound & lighting boards and sometimes even on stage when the play calls for sound effects and spot-on character acting. In the studios, or out and about, Billy D brings the smiles out in everyone he meets.
I was first introduced to KRTN radio in 1969 when I came with members of Jeanette Fidel’s 9th grade Drama Class to record sound effects. Owner Jim Roper asked if I might be interested in working part-time and the rest is, as they say, history.
I worked at KRTN throughout high school then attended New Mexico State University for a year majoring in Broadcast Journalism. I returned to Raton and started working again at KRTN. In 1974, La Mesa Park track announcer Bill Erwin asked if I might be interested in horse race calling. “Sure, why not?” It turned out to be one of the best experiences in my life. I was “ the voice of La Mesa” for all but one year until the close of the track in 1992. Announcing lead to publicity and marketing duties and I was able to serve as Director of Publicity for La Mesa Park, Sunland Park in southeastern New Mexico, Portland Meadows in Oregon, and also Rillito Downs in Tucson. Sprinkled throughout those racetrack stints, were radio programs and jobs in Colorado Springs, Tucson, El Paso and also here in Raton at KRTN.
The gypsy life of the track and the cold corporate mentality became too much, though, when my daughter, Shana, arrived. A move back home to Raton in 1989 proved to be a great decision. Four years later my son Franko arrived and I began collaborations with Bill Fegan Attractions and our beautiful Shuler Theater. My current stint at KRTN started in 1997. I was able to purchase the station from Jim Roper in 2005 and Enchanted Air, Inc. was born.
93.9 KRTN, Enchanted Air radio serves a special area. Awesome geographical sights, history as rich and interesting as anywhere on earth, along with clean water and air are enough for anybody to stop here and make it home. However, it’s the people that make our area really special. Real people who are generous, independent, resourceful and resilient. It’s both an honor and a privilege to provide a service to our communities that not only helps but also, hopefully, entertains.
Thanks for listening!
Aaron Sena-Stevens, aka Oso Carinoso –Morning Programming, Noon News, & Canciones Mexicanas
Aaron was born and raised in Raton, NM. He attended Raton Public Schools and graduated in the RHS class of 2009. Aaron attended post-secondary school at Eastern New Mexico University and CSU-Pueblo, before relocating back to Raton to assist his family in a time of need.
Aaron has a passion for assisting our community local organizations and advocating for youth. Aaron began working for Agave Health in Raton as a Behavioral Management Specialist, working with local children to assist them with skill development and behavioral management techniques to function in the home, school, and community.
During Aaron’s employment in the local behavioral health field, he accepted an offer to volunteer as a DJ on KRTN’s Sunday Program, Canciones Mexicanas. With the assistance and mentorship of Billy D and previous DJ, Danny Griego of CM, Aaron began to “learn the ropes” and functions of KRTN radio.
Now, Aaron is the morning DJ during the Morning Show and Morning News Update. Also Aaron tag-teams with Billy D during This, That, & The Other, along with the Noon News, while also maintaining the role as afternoon DJ “Oso Cariñoso” on Sunday’s show-Canciones Mexicanas. Outside of KRTN, Aaron now works with Youth Heartline Raton as a Safe Exchange/Supervised Visitation Monitor for Custody Visits. Aaron is also involved with various ministries, and is a youth pastor at St. Patrick-St. Joseph’s Church in Raton.

She keeps the traffic flowing through KRTN whether it's advertising, Trading Post, The Pet Patrol, KRTNradio.com or social media. Let us know and we get the information to the community for everything that's happening in NE New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Keep listening....
Jim Veltri
Station Engineer
Jim Veltri, a real wiz kid, has been taking care of the electronics at KRTN radio for twenty-five years now. Born in Hoehne, Colorado, to a ranching and farming family, he was always curious about how electronics worked. His interest led him to pursue an electrical engineering degree and he graduated from Trinidad State Junior College in 1972 with an AAS in Electronic Technology and Computer Maintenance.
His first job out of college was at ARF Products in Raton where he was a product engineer and also took care of electronic maintenance.
Jim is also an electrical engineer for Stolar Horizons. He likes to tell a good story and thinks his job, taking care of the electronics, is much easier in his opinion, than the “hard work” that KRTN radio’s DJ’s have to do.
Jim has a pilot’s license and used to fly a Cherokee 140 PA28—140. He’s sold the plane but he makes sure the music, news, information, and great ads that KRTN radio presents are all on the air!
Marty Mayfield
Multi-media Specialist: [email protected]
Marty Mayfield is a familiar face in our area, photographing news and area sports. Born and raised in Clayton, New Mexico, he has fond memories of his childhood, doing the things kids do and helping out on his grandparents’ ranch. He began his photojournalist career over 30 years ago, while attending Clayton high school, photographing the life and times for the school paper and yearbook.
While the Army took him away for a short time, his heart remained in Northeastern New Mexico and he returned home in 1983. He found work in electronics and began dabbling in news reportage. He was a news stringer for KVII-TV in Amarillo and KOAT-TV in Albuquerque and served as the news director for KLMX Radio in Clayton for two years.
In high school, Marty recalls that his newspaper/yearbook advisor told him to, “Get up there, get in the way, and get the picture”. He warned that folks might be mad when you take the picture, but they will love you when they see the photos. Marty has maintained that philosophy throughout his career. He takes pride in bringing those special photos to parents and grandparents. That same philosophy works for news coverage. Marty is out in the field, getting the story and the images that make it all real for all our listeners.
