One of the most comforting verses in all of scripture is found in Matthew 12:20 NIV which says, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not s***f out, till he has brought justice through to victory.”
What is more weak, delicate or feeble than a cracked reed or a wick barely flickering, about to go out? Even though these characteristics may be used to describe something as useless, it’s more descriptive of His compassion towards us in our weakest hour, state or condition.
A bruised reed depicts those who have been oppressed, beaten up, beaten down, severely wounded and even left for dead by the effects in this sinful world. They have been broken by life, damaged in their hearts and minds, and are experiencing helplessness and hopelessness in their present situation. They are in need of a fresh revelation, a new beginning, with renewed comfort, strength, guidance, stability and victory in their life.
A smoldering wick refers to the wick of an oil lamp or a candle where the flame is exhausted, barely flickering, dying but not yet completely vanquished or dead.
The compassion of Christ is such that He binds up broken hearts, heals wounds, restores and comforts them back to fullness of life. - Apostle Andrew Bills
