"In the latest of a recent string of antitrust lawsuits filed by the department, the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday sued to block a proposed acquisition by publishing giant Penguin Random House of its competitor Simon & Schuster, claiming the deal will limit choice for authors and readers in what's already a highly concentrated industry.

The 26-page complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that the $2.18 billion merger would enable Penguin Random House (PRH), already the world's largest book publisher, to exert outsized influence over which books are published in the U.S. and how much authors are paid for their work."

- California High Court names Jessica Barber Director of Criminal Central Staff, the first Latina to hold the position.

"The California Supreme Court on Tuesday named Jessica Barber as its new director of the 23-member Criminal Central Staff, effective Jan. 3, 2022. Barber will replace Norm Vance, who announced his retirement after 29 years as director. She will be the first Latina attorney to hold the position.

Barber started her career with the court in 2008 as an annual attorney. In 2010, she was promoted to permanent attorney on the Criminal Central Staff, and in 2019, was upped again to deputy director. Prior to that, Barber worked as a legal research attorney at San Francisco County Superior Court. She graduated with highest honors from Golden Gate University School of Law in 2005 and was the first person in her Mexican-American family to go to college. "
