My expectations for my first year of full time freelance work were blown out of the water. I’m grateful for my clients in 2023 who have trusted me with their creative work, and for my wife, Emily, who has believed in me and made it easier to strike out on this venture. So much has happened over the summer! I've launched a new website, spent two weeks away at school working toward my Masters of Fine Arts, had a new book release featuring my illustration work, and worked with Matt Mitchell making new video content for his channels. 2023 has been great so far and I'm grateful for all the work and support in my first year of freelancing. I haven't shared much of my illustration work on this page, but here is a sneak peek of one of my illustrations for an upcoming book from It's a Southern Thing! I bet you can guess the name of this one.... "Potluck".

1. It's not often you film a sketch and a funeral procession glides through the background.

2. I thought Matt Mitchell made up some of the movie titles as jokes which had me cracking up. I laughed harder when I found out some of them are real movies you can find at Dollar General.

3. In the bloopers it may seem that Matt is laughing at his own jokes, but I am cracking up behind camera, which is making him break even more.

When it comes to shooting video, lighting is everything. In my previous work with It's a Southern Thing, I was often in charge of lighting the scenes, the unofficial "Director of Photography". This video in particular was tough. We filmed in a restaurant called Melt in Avondale on a day they were closed. But the area where the characters are sitting was still very dark even with the indoor lighting on, as was the area behind the counter. But I was able to make our actors and the background look natural. How did I do it? Years of experience. So if you're looking to create video content, hit me up. I can light, film, and edit to make a video you and your audience will be happy with.

As we move into spring we get closer to a tradition in the south known as Decoration Day. But it was only after I became an adult that I realized this family holiday wasn't so widely celebrated. So I made a short documentary during my time with This is Alabama that explains the origins of "Decoration" and the regions of Appalachia where it's most commonly recognized.

For this video I did a lot of research, writing, filming, animating, and voice over work, all to highlight how peanuts became a power crop in the Wiregrass region of Alabama and the surrounding areas. It was a long journey for the peanut and for me 😂.
