The largest concentration of steel mills and their associated support industries are in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana region. This title closely examines the steel industry in and around that area, with complete coverage of the locomotives, specialty cars, and facilities that help to make steel and its byproducts. The famous Hot Metal Train is covered in detail. Most of the photographs were taken within the confines of the mills themselves and show the daily operation of the steel mill railroads!

Ever since Charlie Castner wrote his epic full-issue article in the December 1972 Trains Magazine on Louisville Nashville’s “Big Emma” locomotives, he and a dedicated group of individuals from the L&N Railroad Historical Society have continued to research the company’s fleet of 42 of these remarkable 2-8-4s. 52 years later, the NRHS and The Garbely Publishing Company partnered to publish this definitive book on their design, construction, and operation between 1942 and 1956 — pulling (and pushing) fast freights, and enormous coal drags, and even some passenger trains. The story is told mainly through the long-gone voices of those who designed, built, maintained, and operated these locomotives. Illustrations include maps, diagrams, route profiles, art, and various black & white and scarce color images. Don’t miss out on this fantastic new title covering one of North America’s most iconic steam locomotives!

The definitive story of Southern Pacific’s high-reaching experiment in horsepower, tech, and traction is back in an expanded second publication. Southern Pacific & The KM Hydraulics: Second Edition features the full story of SP’s remarkable foray into imported road diesel power during the great horsepower race of the 1960s. Drawing richly upon never-before-seen materials from the U.S. and abroad, author Robert J. Zenk weaves a compelling tale of SP’s audacious spirit of mechanical and corporate innovation meeting the hope-filled ambition of the German postwar economic boom.

Quality hardcover printing with fine color throughout, the book is lavishly illustrated with archival material deep inside German and American operations. KM Hydraulics traces a surprisingly logical evolution of thought, leading to an experiment perhaps doomed to fail but nevertheless leaving a permanent imprint on U.S. motive power and an indelible visual spectacle for fans of the Southern Pacific.

2014’s First Edition from SPH&TS sold out almost immediately; this Second Edition expands on the original’s breadth and depth of coverage with 80 new pages, expanded text, rich with new illustrations and accounts, and a bounty of additional images by some of SP’s finest photographers.

New for this edition:
• New photos by Steinheimer, Benson, Heard, Patterson, Taylor
• Expanded tech sections on Voith hydraulic transmissions & Maybach motors
• Drawings and coverage of little-known design proposals by KM and others
• Expanded coverage of competing Alco Model DH-643
• Complete account of the restoration of SP 9010, the sole survivor

This book documents the changes in Santa Fe from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s as it faced competition from the interstate highway system, jet travel, and changes in transportation tastes. Santa Fe responded with intermodal service, the fastest freight train, more powerful locomotives, and new signal and telecommunications systems while maintaining its hallmark passenger service and creative marketing. The pictures were taken by a career railroader who was proud to restore The Chief name to the public eye.

Santa Fe’s Missouri Division  by James A. Brown.   This installment of a series of regional histories published by the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society examines the Missouri Division of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. The Missouri Division extended westward from Fort Madison, Iowa, to Sheffield, Missouri, on the east side of Kansas City. The St. Joseph District, a branch line that extended northwest from the mainline at Henrietta, Missouri, to St. Joseph, Missouri, is also examined. Historical coverage begins with the planning and building of the line across Missouri and Iowa that occurred from 1883-1888 and extends beyond the consolidation of the Missouri Division with the Illinois Division in 1956 to the merger of the ATSF with the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1995. Included in this volume are over 270 images, tables of data and appendices.

Today’s Union Pacific trains roll through the desert country of the American Southwest on a three-hundred-mile journey between Tucson and El Paso. As part of the legendary Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route through Arizona and New Mexico, it is known as the Lordsburg Subdivision. This double-track main line connects ports in southern California with eastern destinations like New Orleans, Chicago, and Houston, as well as south of the border into Mexico.

Part 1 of this two-part series will cover the western half of the subdivision between Tucson and Steins near the New Mexico state line. Trains crest four different summits, including Mescal, Dragoon, Railroad Pass, and Steins Pass west of Lordsburg.

Monster stack trains over three miles in length are common on the Lordsburg Sub. Plenty of mixed manifest and unit grain trains keep things interesting. This is also the route of Amtrak’s Sunset Limited, which makes a tri-weekly run over the line.

In addition to mainline traffic, we will visit the San Pedro Valley Railroad at Benson and the Arizona Eastern, which serves the large Morenci Copper Mine near Clifton.

This program was shot in April 2024. Shot in beautiful 4K! 2 Hours 2 Minutes, Stereo Sound, Narration on/off

Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was built through the Rocky Mountains, not around them. A tenacious rebel, Rio Grande survived for over a century as an independent railroad in a land of giants. At the end of the 20th century, the enduring memory of Rio Grande is one of black and gold diesels thundering through smoky tunnels on a right-of-way blasted out of solid rock by construction engineers who didn’t know the meaning of the word impossible. With 223 full-color photographs and nine lavishly illustrated maps, this volume presents a retrospective of a railroad where words of description always fall short. In the pages of "Scenic Line of the World," all of the elements that made Rio Grande a scenic wonder may be found. The evergreen mountains of La Veta Pass, the bare rock of the Royal Gorge, the golden aspen on Tennessee Pass, the multi-colored sandstone of Ruby and Bootlegger Canyons, the moonscape of the Utah desert, the majestic Wasatch Range, and the sheer ruggedness of the entire Moffat Road- all are here in one amazing volume. Through acquisitions and mergers, Rio Grande slowly lost its personality to that of Southern Pacific and, later, Union Pacific. The images in this book help preserve the memory of the last years of the Rio Grande and perhaps provide some justification for the railroad’s bold claim of being the Scenic Line of the World.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many of the nation’s most outstanding railroad photographers journeyed to southwestern Colorado and northern New Mexico to document the final years of the Denver & Rio Grande Western’s spectacular narrow-gauge railway. They were driven by a fever for which there was no cure: the chance to photograph half-century-old trains operating on rails spaced three feet apart, the last remnants of an empire.

Drawing from thousands of images of the Rio Grande narrow gauge in the Center’s archive, editors Scott Lothes and Elrond Lawrence gathered the finest work on this rich subject by Tom Gildersleeve, John Gruber, Victor Hand, Don Hofsommer, Jim Shaughnessy, Fred Springer, Richard Steinheimer, and Karl Zimmermann. Inside Rio Grande Steam Finale, you’ll find a stunning gallery of black & white and color images, lavishly presented and many published for the first time, covering the narrow gauge from Alamosa to Chama, Durango, Farmington, and Silverton.

Engaging essays by Hofsommer and Zimmermann, who experienced the narrow gauge in the 1960s, provide context and personal insights. Extensive captions add context to the stories of the photographs, which trace the pattern of typical train operations of the era. The book concludes with a chapter of color images of today’s Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.

On Rio Grande’s Tennessee Pass, the SP Central Corridor crossed The Great Divide, a formidable obstacle to east-west rail traffic, in the 1990s. A new locomotive, the GE AC4400CW, was introduced to tame the 3% grades, hauling massive tonnage 24/7 at 10,000+ feet! This included coal & and taconite trains at 13,000+ tons, double-stack trains, & and a fleet of merchandise freights.

The merger that created Burlington Northern in 1970 and Amtrak’s assumption of intercity passenger service in 1971 brought significant change to BN’s E-unit roster. This culminated in 1972 with the sale of 21 E-units to the West Suburban Mass Transit District for use in Chicago-Aurora suburban service. Following a rebuilding program, these units provided almost 20 years of reliable service on the Chicago “race track.” Authored by noted Chicago commuter rail historian Bruce Nelson, this is the story of the last large E-unit fleet in regular service in America.

The Harriman Associated Lines, particularly the SP, were pioneers in developing all-steel passenger cars. With a staff of creative engineers, competing for engineering leadership with car builders and locomotive works was possible. In 1909, it was decided to build a comprehensive electric commuter rail system in the Oakland-Alameda-Berkeley (“East Bay”) area, operating the trains with the most modern, energy-efficient railcars.

SP got a heavy-duty, electrified commuter railroad for its money, though passenger luxury was missing from the shopping list. Most came with 3-2 seating, no heaters and no dining or lounge cars—as plain vanilla as possible. A few more from Pullman and St. Louis were added later, while the Northwestern Pacific bought nineteen third-rail copies. Some cars were converted from combine to coaches, and some trailers were motorized.

These cars served Bay Area commuters until the SP and NWP electric railroads were abandoned in 1941. With the onset of World War II, more than seventy cars found new homes in southern California’s Pacific Electric to deliver shipyard workers, where they were known as “Blimps.” The PE operated them until 1953, when passenger service was sold to Metropolitan Coach Lines. In 1958, the local government took over, finally abandoning the trains in 1961.

With 335 pages and over 500 pictures, maps and drawings, this book is the first comprehensive study of this subject to appear in decades. Fifty years of photographic images are presented. Hardcover, 8½” x 11″ portrait with dust jacket, 335 pages (32 in color).

Around 35 trains traverse this transcontinental main line daily, originating in Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Arizona, and California.

We begin along the Colorado River at Yuma, where trains cross from California into Arizona. The railroad snakes around the harsh, lifeless Gila Mountains, skirting the edge of the Castle Dome Valley. Following the old route of the Butterfield Stage, trains pass through Dome and Wellton before cresting Mohawk Pass and dropping down to Gila Bend.

The beauty of the desert comes alive as we climb through the Maricopa Mountains, decorated with giant saguaro cacti near Shawmut. The final leg of the journey leads us southeast through Maricopa and the Casa Grande Valley. After passing Picacho Peak, we wrap up at UP’s busy yard in Tucson.

This is desert railroading in the harsh Sonoran Desert country of Arizona. This is Union Pacific’s Gila Sub.

Travel to southern Colorado, northern New Mexico, and BNSF’s Raton & Glorieta Subdivisions, home to Amtrak trains #3&4, the Southwest Chief. This is a comprehensive look at the former AT&SF line between La Junta, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the passenger trains running over it.

This route is the last place in the United States to see semaphore signals running outside a railroad museum, and you’ll enjoy an in-depth look at them. But there’s much more to this route than the semaphores; it’s an incredibly rugged and scenic railroad in its own right, and you’ll see all of it.:

See the Chief race across the Great Plains out of La Junta
Watch the Delhi wig-wag in action
See the climb over the 3% grade of Raton Pass
See all three stands of semaphores before the 2020 replacements took some away
See 1960-era searchlight signals, antiques in their own right.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery of Glorieta Pass
See the Chief in Shoemaker and Apache Canyons
Coverage of the Chief running over the NMRX Albuquerque Subdivision.
Enjoy the route from both trackside and on board.
Fantastic range of one of the most iconic lines in railroading

Since October 1987, Montana Rail Link has plied the rails of the Northern Pacific through central and western Montana. Trains roll over the 900 plus miles to the tune of two-stroke EMD locomotives dressed in the Washington Companies’ blue and black paint scheme.

With news the MRL would soon fade into BNSF, we set out to make a four-part series to document this beloved regional railroad in its final years.

In Part 3, we continue east across Montana Rail Link’s Second Subdivision over Winston Hill and through Lombard Canyon to Logan. See the Helena Local working to Montana City and Townsend. Catch the Jimbo Train in action setting out ties at Toston. The system-wide LM (Laurel to Missoula) and ML (Missoula to Laurel) trains make an appearance pulling long manifests.
In addition to mainline action, we will head up the former NP’s Butte Line through Three Forks, Sappington, and the Jefferson River Canyon to Whitehall. We will also see a rock train loading at the Pipestone Quarry and visit the remote Harrison Branch.

List price $29.95.
