The November 5 election brought about few surprises, as Donald Trump was elected to serve his second non-consecutive term as President of the United States, while Congressman Mike Johnson was overwhelmingly chosen as this area’s U.S. Representative.
In Sabine, a total of 85 percent of those voting, or 8,611 people cast their ballots in favor of Trump, while 1,486 people, or 15 percent, voted for Kamala Harris. A handful of votes were cast for third party candidates such as the Green Party’s Jill Stein, Libertarian Chase Oliver, or the Justice for All Party’s Cornel West. There were 10,166 votes cast throughout the parish. Statewide, 60 percent were in favor of Trump, which equals up to 60 percent. There were 766,405 statewide votes for Harris, representing 38 percent. Nationwide counting is still underway in the presidential race, so no final tally is available at the moment of posting.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also received a plethora of support in Sabineland. Of the 9,218 votes cast, an overwhelming 8,313, or 90 percent of said votes, were in favor of Johnson. Challenger Joshua Morott, also a Republican, received 905 votes. Throughout the district, Johnson received 262,791 votes in his favor, with Morott receiving 43,422.
The proposed 13.88 mills tax in Road District 4, Ward 7 of Sabine Parish was defeated, as 53 percent, or 233 voters outweighed the 204 votes against.
Pleasant Hill saw Democrat Gloria Stewart elected as mayor with 70 percent, or 190 votes, to Libertarian Bryce Pilkington’s 82 votes. Long-time Chief of Police Ray Williams, a Democrat, received 169 votes (59 percent) and will return to office. He had two opponents in the race. Robert Thomas Taylor, an independent, received 85 votes while Republican David Shane Graves received 31.
Constitutional Amendment 31, which dealt with where to put federal proceeds from alternative energy production was overwhelmingly supported statewide, receiving 73 percent of the vote in favor. In Sabine, 5,391 voted in favor of the amendment with 3,879 against.
