8-Ft. Articulated Mower Built Out Of Bean Buggy

"I built an 8-ft. articulated riding mower out of an old Schweiss self-propelled bean buggy. It'll cut grass and w**ds from 2 in. to 7 ft. high," says Daryl Dixon, Plainview, Texas. The machine rides on four 15-in. car tires and is equipped with a home-built, pto-driven deck that has five 22-in. lawn mower blades. The deck can be hydraulically raised up to 2 ft. off the ground. A home-built canopy keeps the driver in the shade.

Crawler Tractors Served WWII Military Well (never before printed)

During WWII, the U.S. military took great pride in moving equipment, artillery, aircraft, and munitions across difficult terrains. U.S. artillery, ranging from gun and howitzer motor carriages depending on size, were towed by a small Jeep, high-speed crawler tractors, and huge Mack prime movers. Tracked tractors were designed and built in several sizes.

Rat Rod Built From A Bit Of Everything

Rich Imhoff could tell right away when he saw a 2008 Ford pickup with only 50,000 miles on it that it was rat rod ready. The body was badly dinged up.
“One taillight and the grill were the only pieces on it that weren’t bent or dented,” recalls Imhoff. “The doors were tied on with rope.”

Half-Scale Deere “A” Is A Crowd Pleaser

Eli Franker has been interested in old John Deere tractors ever since he was a kid. “My great grandfather farmed with a Deere B,” he says.
So 3 years ago when an unfinished 1/2-scale, 1936 John Deere A came up for sale at an auction, he bought it and then finished building it with help from his 8-year-old son Jeffrey.

V-8 Riding Mower Still Going Strong

Back in 1990 Don Robinett, Randall, Kansas, built a riding mower powered by an all-aluminum Buick V-8 gas engine (Vol. 18, No. 3). He’s now 88 years old but still uses the machine regularly, and recently had it professionally repainted “Ford tractor blue”.

Handy Articulated Tiller Cart

When Paul bought a new tiller, he figured the old tiller would make a handy cart. He removed the tines, replaced them with wheels, and attached the power unit with a bolt to a cart that he made with an axle, angle iron, and plywood.

Air Compressor Built From Cadillac Engine

When a relative gave Dan Jamison a late 1970's Cadillac, he decided to turn the car's 425 cu. in. engine into a powerful air compressor/sandblaster.

"I pulled the engine and discarded the transmission, but kept the flexplate and torque converter. I stripped the front fenders, bumper, radiator support, etc. from the front clip and cut it free from the engine," says Jamison.

Update On "First Ever" Articulated Combine (2013)

A “made it myself” articulated combine was featured on the front cover of FARM SHOW in 1983. The articulated combine (the only one of its kind at the time) had 6-ft. tall, 30-in. wide rice tires to carry it in mud and snow. The harvesting components were all on the front end with the engine and drive at the back. The grain hopper was mounted on the rear of the front half, but balanced in between.

“Lil Gen Deere” Made From Ten Different Tractors

Intending to get an old 1969 John Deere 140 garden tractor running, Al Finnbogason bought a 16-hp. Kohler engine and generator out of a Winnebago hoping to split them.

Giant Snow Blade Made From Old Grain Platform

“I made a great snow pusher for my skid steer from an old Deere grain platform,” says Roy Viel of Winnebago, Ill. “It works just as good as a commercial rig and I built it for less than a fourth the cost.” Viel started his project by purchasing a retired old 20-ft. wide Deere 220 grain platform.

41-Year-Old Trucktor Still Going Strong

During 46 years of publishing, FARM SHOW has written about many different trucktors that are a combination of a truck and a tractor. New Yorker Jerry Lilly built his Trucktor four decades ago but figured readers might be interested in another take on the idea.

Lilly used the frame, wheels, operator station, and drive train of a Massey 44 tractor coupled with a 350 V-8 Chevy truck engine. He designed and built a special drive shaft to mate the two components together.

"Mystery Wood Splitter" Built By Pennsylvanian (2014)

After reading a report in FARM SHOW on a hand-powered “mystery wood splitter”, Jeremy Meinert sent us photos of a similar wood splitter that he built last fall and uses in front of his wood shed. Basically, it’s a heavily weighted, spring-loaded arm with a splitting head on the end. The operator splits chunk after chunk of wood with little effort.

Big Roy “Mini” An Exact Replica

When Denis Combot of St. Eustache, Manitoba, heard that Versatile was planning to restore the original Big Roy tractor, he was inspired to build his Mini Big Roy. The goal quickly became to park the two finished tractors side by side at the Agricultural Museum in Austin, Manitoba.

Rare 3-Wheeled Case Tractor

Maryland tractor collector Jim Gargani owns one of the most unusual tractors ever built, a Case 10-20. Designed as transitional power from large and bulky steam engines to smaller-size gas engine tractors, the 10-20 has many peculiar features, including a 22-in. wide by 52-in. tall main drive right rear wheel, a 12-in. secondary drive left rear wheel, and a single front wheel.

Forklift Tractor Built From Garbage Truck

Nathan Strubhar's home-built bale handling loader tractor can pick up and stack six 3 by 4-ft. big square bales three high on a semi truck, or nine high in a barn.

"It's better than a conventional loader tractor because it goes much faster down the highway, in fact over 60 mph, and can lift big square bales up to 27 ft. high," says Strubhar.

Built-From-Scratch “Deere Cat” Tractor

Gerald Fenske’s Deere Cat tractor has a Deere 70 back half with a D-2 Cat diesel engine up front. Combining the two machines required some serious machining, but the result is a fun, working tractor.

“I’ve had so many people just amazed at seeing it and trying to figure out what went into it,” says Fenske, a retired commercial welder and machinist.

"Court Of Dreams" Brings Tennis Players To Iowa Farm

If you’ve seen the Field of Dreams baseball field in Iowa, you’ll know why this meticulously-groomed tennis court – also carved out of an Iowa corn field – is called the “Court of Dreams” by folks who’ve seen it. When Mark Kuhn built it he had no idea it would attract players from 35 states. He built it in 2002 to satisfy his curiosity about Wimbledon’s grass tennis courts.

1/2-Scale IH 660 Tractor

Lyle Scott created this eye-catching 1/2-scale International Harvester 660 tractor using the rear end and axle off a Cub Cadet hydro garden tractor, and the engine and radiator from a Fiat 850 cc car. The front wheel hubs also came off the car.

Self-Propelled Deere BBQ Grill!⁠

When the mower deck and spindles wore out on his 1989 Deere LT 133 garden tractor, Mark Thomas of Jennings, Fla., converted it into a portable grill that runs under its own power. ⁠
⁠
The tractor’s fiberglass hood was broken so he replaced it with one he made out of galvanized sheet metal, pop riveting the hood to the tractor’s frame. Then he converted a 60-gal. air compressor tank into a grill and mounted it on top of the hood. A propane bottle mounts on back of the tractor and is attached by a 3/8-in. dia. hose to the grill. ⁠

As a young lad growing up in Nebraska, Leif Anderson enjoyed helping his family’s neighbor, Jim Moore, with various farm jobs while admiring Moore’s collection of nine older tractors. When Moore passed away, Anderson, who was 18 at the time, inherited his neighbor’s 1949 Case High Crop VAH.

Anderson says he was thrilled to inherit the tractor, which Moore had used to power grain bin augers, bale conveyors, and handle other farm jobs for more than 50 years. In recent years the tractor’s condition had deteriorated. When Anderson went to retrieve it, the engine was frozen. He and his dad towed the tractor to their farm, and he vowed to restore it in Moore’s honor.
