The lowdown on the fuel tank falling from the sky.

At approximately 11 a.m. Jan. 7, a 300-gallon fuel tank dropped from a 96th Test Wing F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The fuel tank landed near Eglin Air Force Base in a residential area in Niceville. No fatalities or injuries occurred from the incident. There was no property damage initially reported. An incident investigation is ongoing.

Eglin authorities are cleaning up the area and taking measures needed to ensure the fuel tank is safely removed. As part of the investigation, Eglin authorities will fly a small drone over the area today, Jan. 8, to thoroughly survey the impact zone.

If you are noticing smoke in the area of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and/or Miramar Beach, there is a prescribed burn taking place on Thursday, December 19.

The Florida Park Service is conducting the burn and we are sharing this post in order to help reduce the number of 911 calls made for a situation that is not a true emergency.

In the event you notice smoke or fire outside of the described area, please call 911 immediately.
