Incredible quick thinking while off-duty. What a story!

The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) announced today that Anoka County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tanner Shipman has been awarded the 2024 “Officer of the Year” for his heroic off-duty actions in South Dakota.

Deputy Shipman was on vacation in Sturgis, South Dakota in August of 2023 when he noticed a male suspect engaged in an incident with a South Dakota State trooper. Nearby, the suspect was pointing and shooting a firearm at the trooper, which caused Deputy Shipman to promptly retrieve a firearm belonging to a family member with his group and assist the trooper who was on the ground. After identifying himself as law enforcement to the trooper, Deputy Shipman and the trooper saw the suspect attempt to get into the trooper’s squad vehicle and a shootout continued. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and Deputy Shipman assisted with medical care until further responders arrived. He survived his injuries and later pled guilty to shooting at the trooper.

Sheriff Brad Wise states, “Deputy Shipman’s 18-year career with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office has countless stories of selfless actions and commitments to justice. It is not surprising that Deputy Shipman would instantly assist someone, even when it comes with great bodily risk, or even death. This well-deserved award from the MPPOA is the highest honor a member of law enforcement can receive, as it comes from law enforcement peers throughout Minnesota. Deputy Shipman is an inspiration to law enforcement, as well as all in our community.”

MPPOA will formally honor Deputy Shipman and other award winners on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

MISSING: A 4-yr-old nonverbal autistic little boy is missing in Hopkins.

Last seen 7:30 a.m. near Chorus Apt 1295 2nd St NE, Hopkins.

Easily startled by noise and drawn to areas of water. There is a massive search for the little boy right now. Police are asking for people in the area to check their yards in case he wondered in.

Again -- startled by noise. Call 911 if you see him.

Goodbyes are sad, so this is see you later!

My pal Jacob is onto his next BIG adventure. His wife and him are scaling their photography and branding business and going to do some cool stuff.

This guy and I clocked MANY hours in the car working together. From getting lost in southern Minnesota (who knew there’s two Windoms?), to almost getting stuck in snow during a driving live shot in St. Paul.

It’s not every day you just click with someone and work well together. I always say reporters and photographers have the closet and most sacred relationships than any other positions in the newsroom. It’s true. You go through it together. Stress of deadlines and sadness from the hard stories and emotional interviews. It’s important you have a good partner to not only have your back physically but mentally.

Jacob, I’ll miss working with ya bud. You don’t know how much I needed some of those Beyoncé jam sessions in the van after those tough days. Go chase your dreams!

I am in Washington D.C. to share some special stories this week.

It’s National Police Week. As there are events across the country to celebrate and honor them, we can’t forget the lives lost in the line of duty. And, 2023 was a very difficult year with 118 active officers killed in the line of duty in the U.S. An unprecedented amount of them were lost in Minnesota and surrounding states.

These men and women are being recognized for paying the ultimate sacrifice tomorrow night outside of the U.S. Capitol.

To the woman I couldn’t do life without, Happy Mother’s Day ♥️

My mom is the most selfless, supportive, and loving woman I know. Truly! Her encouragement to chase my dreams has gotten me where I am today. All those phone calls telling me to not give up finally paid off.

My favorite has been seeing you become a grandma and getting to relive being a mom all over again through your daughter.

My first visit to the U.S. Capitol!

Thank you to the Radio/ TV U.S. Senate Correspondents Gallery for taking me behind the scenes. I was able to see where my fellow journalists work at the Capitol and sat in the Senate + House galleries. No photos allowed there.

The history this building holds can be felt. An incredible experience.

I’ll be staying here through the weekend. More on a special story I am working on later… stay tuned!
