YouGov released a poll this week conducted in partnership with The Economist showing decreased advocacy for Israel among Americans.

The group’s research suggested that since a high of pro-Israel sympathies at 48% on Oct. 14—one week after the Hamas terrorist attacks in southern Israel—the number had fallen to 33% by July 20. Meanwhile, the pro-Palestinian position rose from 10% to 19% during the same period. Many respondents also suggest that 24% support “both sides equally” while 25% remain unsure.

Clasping his hand warmly, a beaming Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their first face-to-face meeting in nearly four years on Friday, as the two sought to mend an important political alliance that had broken down after Netanyahu congratulated Joe Biden on his 2020 presidential victory over Trump.

Trump was waiting on the stone steps outside his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, to greet the Israeli leader, who is on the fifth day of a weeklong U.S. visit aimed at bolstering support for Israel's 9-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza and boosting Netanyahu's own fallen popularity at home.

"The Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools had an exceptional 2023-24 school year and cannot wait for our students to return this fall," Tracey Deagle, superintendent of Gahanna-Jefferson Schools, writes in a guest column.

"Our district leaders have been hard at work bringing our strategic plan to the finish line; a process that began more than a year ago. Through surveys and listening sessions with our students, staff and community we collected more than 1,000 data points of what our people feel about GJPS and want to see in our future. Our strategic plan framework was approved by our Board of Education in December 2023."

Veteran diplomat Martin S. Indyk, an author and leader at prominent U.S. think tanks who devoted years to finding a path toward peace in the Middle East, died Thursday. He was 73.

His wife, Gahl Hodges Burt, confirmed in a phone call that he died from complications of esophageal cancer at the couple's home in New Fairfield, Connecticut.

The Council on Foreign Relations, where Indyk had been a distinguished fellow in U.S. and Middle East diplomacy since 2018, called him a “rare, trusted voice within an otherwise polarized debate on U.S. policy toward the Middle East.”

"As some Jewish young adults across the country have taken to their campus quads and protested Israel’s response in Gaza over the past few months, I’ve cringed at the thought of how many young Jews we’ve lost ideologically to this war," Rabbi Sharon Mars writes in the Torah column. "Having been born just six months prior to the Six Day War in 1967, I’ve never known a world without Israel – Israel the powerful, Israel the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel that beacon of hope to all Jews everywhere. But the generation after me doesn’t have that specific memory."

In the special reading for the Shabbat of Chol HaMoed Passover, it states, “You shall make the Chag Shavuot, the festival of weeks, with the first offering of the wheat

The streets are deserted, the malls, stores and businesses long shuttered, and the pockmarks of war are everywhere.

Even for Israel’s northernmost border city long known for bearing the brunt of rocket attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon in decades past, as well as earlier notorious Palestinian terror attacks, the nearly 10 months since the outbreak of war following the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre have been an anomaly.

“I’ve been through all the wars here over the last half-century but never have we faced something like this,” says Kiryat Shmona policeman Nahum Cohen, 54, a lifelong city resident. “Never have we been away from our homes for such a long time.”

As president, Donald Trump went well beyond his predecessors in fulfilling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top wishes from the United States. Yet by the time Trump left the White House, relations between the two had broken down after Netanyahu rapidly congratulated Joe Biden on his 2020 presidential victory.

On Friday, the two men will meet face-to-face for the first time in nearly four years in a test of whether the relationship can be mended. Both have an interest in getting past their differences.

"NFL preseason football camps are underway," writes sports columnist Andy Baskin.

"The Cleveland Browns will hold just six practices open to the public in Berea this season. It’s a far cry from the days fans would witness the team practice at Kent State University or Hiram College for training camp. There is a good reason for this season and probably next year too. The Browns have bought land, including tearing down houses on Pearl Street back to Depot Avenue, in Berea. They are expanding the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus. The Browns packed up and left for The Greenbrier luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., for the early part of camp."

Paris has long been a city of dreamers: Just look at the Eiffel Tower, for decades the world's loftiest structure. Audacity also underpins the French capital's plans for its first Olympic Games in a century, which open Friday with an opening ceremony for the ages.

The most sprawling and elaborate Olympic opening ever — a gala spectacular Friday evening on the River Seine that even French President Emmanuel Macron says initially felt like “a crazy and not very serious idea” — kicks off 16 days of competition that promise to be ground-breaking, with nearly every corner of the city hosting some aspect of competition.

Oren Goldin, 33, Ravid Katz, 51, Maya Goren, 56, Sgt. Kiril Brodski, 19, and Staff Sgt. Tomer Yaakov Ahimas, 20, were all previously declared dead in absentia.

Israeli forces located their remains during an operation in Khan Younis. The IDF began a major operation on Monday to root out a Hamas resurgence in the southern Gaza city.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to make a long-awaited White House visit Thursday to meet with President Joe Biden and likely Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris at an important moment for all three politicians.

Netanyahu's White House visit, his first since before President Donald Trump left office in 2020, comes at a time of growing pressure on all three to find an endgame to the nine-month war that's left more than 39,000 dead in Gaza. What's more, dozens of Israeli hostages and the remains of others who have died are still languishing in Hamas captivity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday defended his country's conduct in the devastating Gaza war, urged the U.S. to support the fight against Hamas and ridiculed protesters during a scathing address to Congress.

But he also cited an unverified intelligence report and ignored much of the criticism in a war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and devastated Gaza.

Crowds of demonstrators swelled outside the Capitol as the Israeli leader spoke, with many protesting the killings of more than 39,000 Palestinians in the war. Others condemned Netanyahu’s inability to free Israeli and American hostages taken by Hamas and other groups during the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that sparked the conflict.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday delivered a solemn call to voters to defend the country's democracy as he laid out in an Oval Office address his decision to drop his bid for reelection and throw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

Insisting that “the defense of democracy is more important than any title,” Biden used his first public address since his announcement Sunday that he was stepping aside to deliver an implicit repudiation of former President Donald Trump. He did not directly call out Trump, whom he has called an existential threat to democracy. The 10-minute address also gave Biden a chance to try to shape how history will remember his one and only term in office.

When it comes to desirable factors in residential real estate, the “location, location, location” axiom still applies – but there are other considerations in today’s housing market.

New Albany and Gahanna are active housing markets in central Ohio owing to a number of factors, according to two residential Relators.

“The two most important things to buyers are location and the school district,” Jan Kanas, Street Sotheby's International Realty said.

Paige Winter, Realtor- Winter Group, a license partner for Engel & Völkers Real Estate Advisors in Columbus, concurred, but there are even other considerations.

A proposed anti-gerrymandering amendment in Ohio that would remove politicians from the redistricting process in favor of a citizens commission has gathered enough signatures to proceed to voters on the November ballot.

The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office certified 535,005 signatures for the Citizens Not Politicians ballot initiative that would create an independent redistricting commission and replace the Ohio Redistricting Commission made up entirely of elected officials.

U.S. regulators are investigating why Delta Air Lines failed to recover as quickly as other airlines from a global technology breakdown and whether Delta's treatment of passengers stranded by canceled and delayed flights violated federal rules.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday announced the investigation into Delta's response to the outage, which he said has affected more than half a million of the airline's passengers.

A Delta official said the airline expects to return to normal operations by the end of the week.

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance used his first solo campaign rallies Monday to throw fresh barbs at Vice President Kamala Harris a day after President Joe Biden threw the presidential election into upheaval by dropping out and endorsing his second-in-command to lead Democrats against Donald Trump.

The Ohio senator campaigned at his former high school in Middletown before an evening stop in Radford, Virginia, two venues intended to play up his conservative populist appeal across the Rust Belt and small-town America that he said the Biden-Harris administration has forgotten.

24/07/2024

President Joe Biden’s decision to step down from the 2024 presidential election on July 21 is sending shockwaves through the political landscape.

His exit of the race is just one of several pivotal events, such as the assassination attempt of Trump on July 13; Trump being officially named as the Republican Party’s nominee at the Republican National Convention only a few days later on July 15 and his selection of U.S. Sen. JD Vance, R-Cincinnati, as his running mate; and Biden’s official endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the party’s presidential nominee after he ended his reelection campaign.

Even though Biden’s decision will cause eyes to be on the election, Herb Asher, professor emeritus of political science at The Ohio State University in Columbus, and Justin Buchler, associate professor of political science at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, told the Columbus Jewish News on July 22 that many of the voters have their minds already made up for this upcoming election.

The arrival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has touched off a flurry of protests in the nation’s capital, including a sit-in at a congressional office building that ended with multiple arrests. Some of the demonstrations have condemned Israel but others have expressed support while pressing Netanyahu to strike a cease-fire deal and bring home the hostages still being held by Hamas.

24/07/2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough Democratic delegates as of July 23 to become her party’s presidential nominee, two days after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 election.

The news came a week after former President Donald Trump, 78, received the Republican party presidential nomination alongside U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Cincinnati, as his vice presidential running mate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. It was two days after an assassination attempt on Trump at a political rally in Butler, Pa., about 232 miles from Columbus.

“Anybody who watched the debate, frankly I think most of the country before the debate, recognized that for health reasons (Biden) wasn’t capable of this,” Brad Kastan, a Bexley resident and registered Republican, told the Columbus Jewish News July 23. “I don’t think it’s a surprise to anybody who’s paying attention.”
