In this issue of Letter Arts Review we feature a group of lettering artists who discuss their practice of hand-making books, and the continuing relevance of the book form in our contemporary world. Steven Skaggs writes on what he terms "The Radical Art of Calligraphy." We have an excerpt from John Stevens' new book, Mastering Brush Roman Capitals. And we present selections of Kristoffel Boudens' sketches of historical inscriptions, reflecting his life-long fascination with unusual and stylized letterforms. This next issue of Letter Arts Review is the realization of an idea I’ve knocked around for a long time: to look at calligraphic book design from a global perspective. I’ve wanted to create a resource of visual examples drawn from history that could be of practical use to today’s scribes. I’ve decided to dedicate this whole issue to this topic, partly because there are so many good examples of calligraphic books to share. But I also wanted to show books large—each one on a full spread if possible. I want people to be able to pore over the pictures and really look at the details. I hope in so doing, that this issue can be a resource people will want to refer to again and again— Christopher Calderhead Letter Arts Review; Editior

As we start Letter Arts Reviews' 37th year in print, our cover artist is Joke Boudens from Belgium. Joke is one of the featured artists in the next issue of Letter Arts Review. For many years, she has produced highly personal accordion-folded compositions on paper. Each one measures 14 x 75 centimeters. Her subject matter reflects her broad interests—snippets of family history, tools, maps, the natural world, and, of course, lettering carefully executed in many styles. LAR goes to print this month if you would like to subscribe and receive Issue 37.1 follow this link. https://www.seahillpress.com/home-1/letterartsreview/
