The Meters came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of Funk in the mid 60's.

If someone asked me what my life’s mission was a year ago, I’d say it was to prove to everyone that people like me aren’t what people think they are. To prove to myself that I can be something even though everyone around me had low expectations. To be friends with everyone, to be liked, to be accepted.

Today, my answer to that same question is to spend as much time at the beach as possible with the people I love the most. F**k acceptance.
