I've recently been hit with a slew of Facebook messages purporting to be from Facebook support, notifying me that my page is about to be shut down due to a violation and a link attached for information Usually the link ends with a .php extention. This is a clear scam.
Please be careful with any messages that include links, both to your personal account or your page. In most cases, the account is closed within days, but the damage an errand click can do can be extreme.

DATA BREACH ALERT!!
GoDaddy Breached – Plaintext Passwords – 1.2M Affected

If you have a MANAGED WordPress account with GoDaddy, they were breeched in September. The breach was just noticed, so the perpetrators have had 2 and a half months to access websites.

WHAT CAN I DO?
If you have a managed WordPress hosting account with GoDaddy, they have reset database passwords, but you should go through your WordPress instance and check to see if you have any unauthorized administrators or any new, unauthorized plugins on your website.

One market that my consulting company has had a lot of success is the hospitality industry. Restaurants and hotels present unique challenges in their digital marketing presentations. However, one thing is critical in any business and, sadly, many restaurants are missing out is having a proper digital footprint. I can't count how many restaurants have old, unattractive websites, created by either family or a friend of a friend before mobile devices became the primary way people find their restaurants. Combine that with old or even unused social media accounts and even unclaimed Yelp profiles, it's clear that while many restaurants may do the food part right, there is something significantly missing in their business plan. The best way to succeed is to do the little things necessary for success. Not every restaurant has the budget of a huge chain, but if you can't make the slightest effort, how am I, as a consumer, supposed to feel about your efforts to please me, as a diner?

I love small businesses. I would rather support one than a national chain as a consumer. Over the past 15 months, many small businesses have gone under because of the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Today many small businesses are struggling to survive. As a digital marketer, I have offered my assistance, [particularly to mom and pop restaurants who have borne the brunt of the financial damage. What I've found is that many refuse to do even the bare minimum to help themselves. Things like no website, broken website or redirected websites are common. But those things need investment by the business. What really disappoints me is when a restaurant doesn't even bother to claim their own listing on Yelp. Yelp has become a critical property to be found on. Many diners make their decisions based on the rankings and by not claiming their account, restaurants risk elements on their page going out of their control. Things like business hours, pictures, descriptions, categories can all be wildly wrong.

As a small business owner, I try to control the controllable. I hope this reaches those who aren't and encourages them to help themselves, even in the most basic way. We've lost too many businesses to this pandemic.

Customer Reviews are the single best way of promoting your business. For me, most of my clients are either from people I know or people who were referred to me by either friends or customers who were happy with the job I did for them. The problem is that many business owners are reluctant to ask for a review and even if they are, don't know where to put it. Yelp, Facebook, Google, so many different review sites to choose from. So, let me help you there with some tips about customer reviews.

1. Don't be afraid to ask.
The number one problem with getting customer reviews is asking for them. If a customer is happy with my service, I need to push through and ask for a review. I give them the URL of my platform of choice, I'll get to that in a bit, and respectfully ask for a short review.

2. Platform
Depending on your business, some places are better than others for reviews. If you own a restaurant, you want great Yelp reviews. Some might want a review on their Better Business Bureau page or on their page. Let's keep it simple. Go with Google. It's made for you to share a link and ask for a review. Yelp, by the way, discourages businesses asking for reviews, they want them to come in organically, which is why when you first open up, the majority of reviews are negative. Yup, for your first 10 reviews posted on Yelp, only the negative ones will be counted until you get your footing.

3. What Should They Say
I get this from time to time. Customers willing to post a review, but they ask me what to say. If this happens to you, I simply tell them to say they were happy and tell how my work positively impacted their business. It's important that the review be genuine and come from your client with the minimum of prodding.

So that's it. In general, if you do a good job, stand by your word and put the customer first, most will post a review if asked. To get your URL for Google reviews, go to your main Google My Business page and look for the GET MORE REVIEWS box on the right side. Click the link to open the box and get your review link. I'm seeing a high increase in brute force login attacks today. That's when people try to access the back end of your website with possible userid / password combinations. One reason to do this it to implant files or links to spyware or malware. Some things to do:

* Change your USERNAME to one not easily guessed from your web property
* NEVER, EVER use the word ADMIN as your UserName
* Install a good security program to handle this type of activity. I highly recommend WordFence
* Make sure your PASSWORD is a combination of letters, both cases, numbers and special characters. Starting with a number is the best way, but hardest to remember.
* Set up login notifications in your security program. If someone does access, do not panic. Simply change the password immediately and go through your website carefully to access damage.

Bad people are out there and are trying to leverage your hard work to their own ends. Keep yourself and your business safe.
